SAN ANGELO, TX – The Angelo State Baseball team of 2019 made history on Saturday night by setting the record for most consecutive wins in program history at 16. The Rams swept the Saturday doubleheader against the Texas A&M – Kingsville Javelinas and look to complete the series sweep on Sunday for Senior Day at 1 p.m. With the wins, Angelo State clinches the Lone Star Conference regular season title.
Game 1
The Rams were held scoreless for the first two innings of the first game of the day and were behind early as the Javelinas benefited from a solo homerun in the second inning. A deep double from Nick Seginowich in the third plated Nicholas Novak to tie the game up at one. The Rams did what they do best and exploded for multiple runs in the fourth and six innings of the seven-inning game to take a decisive 9-2 win. Novak and Seginowich made a powerful impression early into the day, combining for five hits and six RBI in the game. Novak also collected his fifth home run of the season in the game, and the Rams were good for six doubles as a team.
Trent Baker (9-1) earned his ninth win of the season with solid five innings of work, giving up two runs on six hits and striking out a pair. Nick Coffman then came in for relief in the form of a perfect inning to get the Rams out of a bases loaded jam by inducing two groundouts and striking out a hitter. Fabian Muniz closed out the last inning of game by striking out two and having a hitter fly out, which would give the Rams their 15th consecutive win, tying the program record.
Game 2
The night cap game was a much closer affair than the first, ending in a 6-5 win for the Rams after a Parker Bramlett walk-off groundball. After the Javelinas once again got on the board first, the Rams rallied for four runs in the bottom of the third in what may have been one of the craziest hitting sequences to occur in San Angelo. After Jordan Williams brought Michael Urquidi in to score with a sac fly to right field, Josh Elvir roped a deep ball over the center field fence that scored two to take a one run 3-2 lead. Nick Seginowich then went back to back with Elvir, but in the fashion of an inside the park home run on a frozen rope hit to deep right center field.
The Javelinas would continue to fight back; however, and scored one run in the sixth and two in the seventh to tie the game at 5-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Seginowich was the first Ram to reach base in the inning by drawing a one out walk. Jacob Finke then singled to center field and stole second to eliminate the double play. Riley Peterson was intentionally walked to put the double play back in order, but Parker Bramlett came in clutch by chopping a groundball to the shortstop who would not have enough time to make a play – Rams win 6-5.
It was a combined effort from the pitching staff that gave the lineup a chance. Tyler Lesley earned the start and would remain effective through 4.2 innings, giving up only two runs on four hits. Nick Coffman (6-0), who earned the win, threw the final inning for the Rams and gave up two runs on three hits, but this prove to be just enough for the Rams to come away with the win.
