Deep Ball Sinks Rams in Close Loss to DBU

DALLAS, Texas – The Angelo State men's basketball team put together a much better performance in game two against DBU, but perimeter shooting by the Patriots kept the result the same as the Rams fell 93-86 at the Burg Center on Saturday afternoon.

ASU (0-2, 0-2 LSC) got off to a strong start in the game as Paul Williams made a layup to go to 10-8 early in the first period. As both teams traded baskets, DBU (2-0, 2-0 LSC) strung together a nine-point run to go up 29-20, its largest lead of the first half.

The Rams came back with an eight-point run of their own, led by Salisu Yahaya who broke DBU's run with a three-pointer followed by a layup to come within one point of the lead. In the closing moments of the half, Kevon Godwin scored from behind the arc to tie the game 40-40 heading into the break.

Angelo State moved the ball well, tallying six players in double-figures in points with Yahaya leading the squad with 17 points to go along with three rebounds and two blocks. Following him was Williams with 15 points, seven rebounds, and six assists, while Burone Edwards added 14 points.

Down 47-45 with 16:34 to play, DBU took control with a 13-0 run, hitting three three-points in that span. The Patriots finished the day with 19 three-pointers, shooting 43 percent from deep. DBU took its largest lead of the game with 12:01 to play, as Ricky Lujan converted a layup to go up 67-52.

The Rams and Patriots were close throughout the game, both shooting 52 percent from the field while DBU edged out Angelo State in rebounds 30-29. Angelo State scored 52 points in the paint and shot 17-of-20 from the free-throw line compared to six-of-seven for DBU.

Trailing by 12 points with just over six minutes to play in the game, the Rams put together another run, scoring 11 straight points to come within three points of DBU. Lavaris Duncan and Godwin both finished the game with 12 points while Elijah Moleon added 11 points of his own.

The Patriots hit two more threes late in the game to keep the lead in their favor before sealing the victory with four free throws to close out the game.

The Rams will host their home opener next weekend as they welcome in Texas A&M-Kingsville for two games beginning Friday, Dec. 18 at Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
