SAN ANGELO, Texas – The bats came alive and fostered a home run derby, as the No. 1 Angelo State University Ram baseball team smashed Eastern New Mexico University, 26-3, on Saturday afternoon. Texas A&M transfer
Aaron Walters led the team with five RBI in two hits and scored two runs. The Rams also tied the program record for most runs scored (26) in a game.
The Rams improve to 2-0 on the season and in Lone Star Conference action.
In Case You Missed It:
- The bats started hot for the Rams, as Nicholas Novak knocked a double to left center field to score Justin Lee for the first run of the game and put ASU up 1-0.
- In the second inning, Tyler Mendoza led off and smashed a two-run homer in his first ever at-bat in the Blue and Gold over the right field wall to put the Rams up 3-0.
- The hits kept going as Josh Elvir scored Parker Bramlett on a double down the right field line.
- Walters knocked a three-run one out homer to push the Rams to 7-0. Bradley Mathiowetz continued the home run fest, knocking one out of the park in left field to increase the Rams lead to 8-0.
- At the top of the third inning, the Greyhounds ended the ASU shutout scoring two runs off an Angelo State error to trail 8-2.
- The bottom of the third inning looked a lot like the second with the bats swinging. Lee wailed a double down the right field line to bring Bramlett home.
- Elvir stepped up and added to the home run festivities, whacking one over the right center field wall to score two more runs for the Rams and push the lead to 11-2 and force an ENMU pitching change.
- Walters didn't let the pitching change stop the Rams, as he smacked another ball out of the park for a two-run homer to lead 13-2.
- With two outs in the inning, Charlie Bartlett swung for the fences as he too hit a home run to give ASU a 14-2 lead.
- The momentum was non-stop as the hits kept coming and the Rams scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth, two runs in the bottom of the fifth, and four in the bottom of the sixth to claim a 26-3 victory.
Coach Brooks's Comments:
"Thought we came out today and got better. It was great to see such great production from the whole team. Hopefully tomorrow we can come out and finish the series strong."
Notable Performances:
- The Rams combined for eight extra base hits and six home runs. Walters led the team going 2-for-2 from the plate and registering two home runs and five RBI.
- Elvir finished the day 3-of-6 from the plate with four runs scored, four RBI, and one home run.
- Novak was right behind Elvir with four runs scored, one hit, and one RBI.
- Derrick Winn and Mathiowetz contributed to the scoring fest with three runs while Mathiowetz tallied one RBI and Winn had one RBI.
- Four other players contributed with one run while two others scored two runs.
- On the mound, Benjamin Elder made his ASU debut throwing six strikeouts through four innings.
- Jake Jansa and Kyle Moseley made their first collegiate debuts each throwing for one inning. Moseley tallied two strikeouts while Jansa had one.
