SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State University baseball team heads to Edmond, Oklahoma, to take on new conference opponent, Oklahoma Christian University in a three-game series. All three games are slated for 1 pm. starting on Friday, February 7.

Series History:
The Eagles and Rams meet for the second time in school history. The last time these two teams met was in 2018 with ASU claiming an 11-8 victory. In that meeting, the Rams trailed 5-0 to start the bottom of the fifth inning and scored four runs to trail 5-4. The Eagles scored two more runs in the seventh inning to lead 8-4 but the Blue and Gold managed to score four runs to tie the game 8-8 and closed out the seventh with their first lead of the game at 9-8. The Rams went on to score two more runs in the eighth to take the 11-8 victory. Oklahoma Christian holds a 0-3 record to start the season and conference play.

Last Time Out:
The Rams held their season opener at home against Eastern New Mexico, outscoring the Greyhounds 46-4. On Friday, the Blue and Gold defeated ENMU 10-1. They tallied 12 hits, nine RBI, and 10 runs. On the mound,
Trent Baker struck out 10 batters and gave up four hits and one run through seven innings of work.

On Saturday, the bats came alive as the Rams notched six home runs through two innings early on in the game. The Blue and Gold scored seven runs in the second, six runs in the third, and six runs in the fourth to tie a program record of 26 runs scored.
Tyler Mendoza smashed his first home run in a Ram uniform to start off the slug fest.
Aaron Walters smacked a three-run homer out of the park, followed by
Bradley Mathiowetz with a solo home run in his first year back after missing the 2019 season due to injury. In the third inning,
Josh Elvir hit a two-run homer over the right center field wall followed up by Walters for his second home run of the day to score two runs.
Charlie Bartlett rounded out the home run fest at the bottom of the third.
Benjamin Elder got his first start in a Ram uniform on the mound going four innings, registering six strikeouts. He gave up three hits and two runs but earned his first Ram win.

On Sunday, Angelo State closed out the series sweep of Eastern New Mexico with a 10-0 shutout. It was a slow start as the Rams took a quick 2-0 lead, scoring off errors by ENMU. In the fifth inning, Mathiowetz opened things up, wailing a bases clearing triple to left field to increase the Rams lead to 6-0. From there, the Blue and Gold scored one more run in sixth and three runs in the seventh, ending the game on a double by
Jordan Williams to score Bartlett for the 10-0 conference run rule.
Josh Barnett got his first start of the season, striking out five batters in six innings of work and only gave up two hits.

Notable Players:
Mathiowetz leads the team with eight RBI after the opening weekend. He went 3-for-6 from the plate and notched his first home run after returning from an injury that kept him out last season. He batted for a .500 average and had a slugging percentage of 1.500 over the three games. Mathiowetz's performance earned him Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week.

Walters, the transfer from Texas A&M, had an impressive first outing as a Ram hitting two home runs. He went 3-for-7 from the plate and tallied five RBI and four runs scored. He also had one double.

On the mound,
Trent Baker had a great return to the mound for the season opener, throwing 10 strikeouts through seven innings of work. He gave four hits and one run but earned his first win of the season, 1-0.

Following the weekend at Oklahoma Christian, the Rams will return home to host Cameron for a four-game series, beginning on Friday, February 14 at 3 p.m. Saturday will be the first double header of the season starting at 2 p.m. First pitch on Sunday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
