MELBOURNE, Florida – The Angelo State Rambelle softball team threw a back-to-back no hitter as the Rambelles defeated the St. Leo Lions, 2-1, and defeated the Florida Tech Panthers, 2-0.
The Rambelles move to 6-3 overall.
Against St. Leo University:
- At the top of the second inning, Genesis Armendariz would throw two strikeouts to give the Rambelles another chance at-bat.
- Karina Rocha hit a double out into deep right center field, and would advance to third base on a wild pitch to put Angelo State in a scoring position.
- Courtney Barnhill hit a triple right down the right field line to put the Rambelles in a scoring position at the top of the third inning.
- With Avery Zeigler being walked and Maleya Burns being hit by a pitch, Madison Fernandez would step up to the plate with bases loaded, but would strikeout swinging.
- With a runner on base, Armendarizs' pitching and the Rambelles defense would keep the Lions lead to just one run.
- Barnhill hit a single into left field and advance Mykayla Stroud to second base.
- Barnhill and Stroud would steal second and third base, putting Angelo State in another scoring position.
- Armendariz would go 3-3 on outs, sending the Rambelles offense back to the batter's box to get the offense going.
- Fernandez would crank a double down the left field line, with Megan Gordo pinch running for Fernandez.
- Rocha singled into left field, scoring Gordon for an RBI with Logan Graham to pinch run for Rocha. The Rambelles would tie the game at 1-1.
- Jade Strother singled into left field, advancing Graham to second. Paxton Scheurer would hit a single into deep center, advancing to second on the throw, and advanced Strother to third and score Graham as the Rambelles would take a 2-1 lead over the Lions at the bottom of the 6th inning.
- Armendarizs' pitching and the Rambelles defense would quickly take care of the Lions at the top of the 7th, as Angelo State would defeat the No. 25 St. Leo Lions, 2-1.
Key Players:
- Genesis Armedariz threw her first collegiate no-hitter as a true freshman, throwing three strikeouts with only one runner on base off of a walk.
- Karina Rocha had three at-bats with two hits and one RBI.
- Paxton Scheurer had three at bats with two hits and one RBI.
Against Florida Tech:
- Meagan Hill and the Rambelles defense started the game against the Panther with a strikeout to bring the Rambelles back to the batters' box to get the offense rolling.
- A single into left field puts Keilei Garcia on first, with Jade Strother on deck. A throwing error advances Strother to second and scores Garcia. The Rambelles take an early 1-0 lead over Florida Tech.
- Mykayla Stroud hit a sacrifice bunt to the 3rd baseman, advancing Strother to third.
- Strother would score for Angelo State on a passed ball, bringing the Rambelles lead to 2-0 over Florida Tech.
- Courtney Barnhill hit a single to the pitcher and beat the throw, and shortly after would steal second base.
- Avery Zeigler would hit a single towards third base, advancing Barnhill into scoring position at third.
- Hills pitching skills showed themselves as she struck out one Florida Tech player and two more grounded out to second base to end the third inning.
- Stroud would get to first on a bunt to bring Barnhill to the plate for ASU. Barnhill would ground out to second but advanced Stroud to second in the top of the 5th inning.
- Fernandez would start the top of the 6th inning off by being hit by a pitch to advance to first base. Ashlyn Lerma would pinch run for Fernandez.
- Rocha would reach 1st on a fielders' choice as Lerma would be thrown out at second. Megan Gordon would pinch run for Rocha, and would steal second base.
- Hills pitching and the Rambelles defense kept the Panthers from scoring as Angelo State defeated Florida Tech, 2-0, and sweeping their tournament opponents.
Coach Scott had this to say about how the games went: "Outstanding pitching performances from Genesis and Meagan. Two big wins. Need to get the win tomorrow and come home with 4 wins."
