Rambelles Sweep St. Edwards in Two Game Series

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State Rambelle softball team were successful in remaining victorious at home as ASU swept the St. Edward's Hilltoppers in a doubleheader, 8-0 in the first game and 7-3 in game two.
The Rambelles are now 19-6 overall with a 5-3 conference record.
 
Game One:
Top of the 1st Inning:
Genesis Armendariz and the Rambelle defense quickly shut the Hilltoppers offense down as three Hilltopper batters would hit three grounders to the second baseman, the shortstop, and the pitcher to bring the Rambelles to their first offensive push for the day.
 
Top of the 2nd Inning:
St. Edward's would continue to have a slow offensive push in the 2nd as the Rambelle defense would keep the Hilltoppers from getting on base with two grounders to the third baseman and one hitting a line drive into the glove of the right fielder.
 
Bottom of the 3rd Inning:
  • Jade Strother would get the Rambelle offense moving as she hit a single into center field, with Ashlyn Lerma behind her.
  • Lerma would hit a ball down the left center field line for a single, advancing Strother to second base.
  • Hatty Shope would walk, loading the bases for Paxton Scheurer, who would fly out to center field, scoring Strother and advancing Lerma to third for an RBI, giving the Rambelles a 1-0 lead over the Hilltoppers.
  • Courtney Barnhill would reach first on a fielders' choice as the shortstop would throw Shope out at second, giving Lerma a chance to score another run for ASU, extending their lead to 2-0.
  • With Maleya Burns to bat for the Rambelles, Barnhill would steal second shortly before Burns would smack a double deep into right center field, scoring Barnhill for another RBI and extending ASUs' lead to 3-0.
  • Keilei Garcia would hit a single to the second baseman and beat the throw to first, giving Burns the chance to run home for another run for ASU, bringing the Rambelles lead to 4-0 over St. Edward's.
 
Bottom of the 4th Inning:
  • Ashlynn Box would start the bottom of the 4th inning for ASU by being hit by a pitch.
  • Strother would hit a grounder to the pitcher, advancing Box to second base with Lerma up to bat.
  • Lerma would walk, with Shope up next to bat for the Rambelles. Shope would hit a single into left center field, advancing Lerma to third and scoring Box for another RBI for the Rambelles, extending Angelo States lead to 5-0.
  • With a pitching change for the Hilltoppers, Scheurer would immediately hit a single into left center field, advancing Shope to third and scoring Lerma to bring the Rambelles lead to 6-0.
 
Top of the 5th Inning:
Armendariz and the Rambelle defense continued to control the momentum of the game for ASU as one Hilltopper would fly out to center field, while the second batter would pop up to the third baseman. The third batter would end up walking, being stranded on first while the last batter would ground out to the second baseman.
 
Bottom of the 5th Inning:
  • With two outs for the Rambelles, Box would hit a single to the pitcher and beat the throw to first. Megan Gordon would pinch run for Box, stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch.
  • Another wild pitch against Strother gave Gordon the chance to run home, giving ASU a 7-0 lead over the Hilltoppers.
 
Bottom of the 7th Inning:
  • Lerma would walk as Shope came to bat behind her. Shope would ground out to the third baseman, giving Lerma the chance to advance to second.
  • Lerma would advance to third base on a wild pitch, and showing off her speed and quick footwork, would advance home and score the final run of the game for ASU on a passed ball, extending the Rambelles lead to 8-0, defeating the Hilltoppers in game one.
 
Key Players:
  • Paxton Scheurer had three at-bats with one hit and two RBI.
  • Courtney Barnhill had three at-bats with one run, one hit, and one RBI.
  • Hatty Shope had three at-bats with one hit and one RBI, along with being walked once.
  • Ashlynn Box had two at-bats with one run and one hit.
  • Ashlyn Lerma had one at-bat with three runs and one hit, along with two walks.
  • Genesis Armendariz threw for six innings, throwing two strikeouts and allowing only three hits and facing 25 batters.
 
Game Two:
Top of the 1st Inning:
Meagan Hill and the Rambelle defense started game two off to a good start for ASU as one Hilltopper batter would fly out to center field, another would ground out to the shortstop, and the final batter would pop up to the second baseman.
 
Bottom of the 1st Inning:
  • Hatty Shope would be hit by a pitch with Paxton Scheurer on deck to bat for ASU. Shope would attempt to steal second base and would unfortunately leave a second too early, resulting in an out for Angelo State,
  • Scheurer would hit a double into deep center field, with Courtney Barnhill on deck for the Rambelles. Barnhill would walk with Maleya Burns up next to bat for ASU.
  • Burns would also be hit by a pitch, advancing Barnhill to second and Scheurer to third.
  • Keilei Garcia would hit a double into right field, scoring Scheurer, Barnhill, and Burns for a triple RBI to give Angelo State an early 3-0 lead over St. Edward's.
  • Madison Fernandez hit a single into left field, advancing Garcia to third base.
  • Ashlynn Box would reach first base on a fielders' choice, advancing Fernandez to second. Garcia would attempt to run home and be thrown out in the process.
  • Jade Strother would walk, advancing Box to second and Fernandez to third with Ashlyn Lerma up to bat.
  • Lerma would also walk, advancing Strother to second, Box to third, and scoring Hernandez for the Rambelles fourth run, giving ASU a 4-0 lead over St. Edward's.
 
Top of the 2nd Inning:
St. Edwards would slowly start gaining some momentum in the 2nd inning, hitting a double into deep center field with only one out. One Hilltopper would fly out to left field, with the final batter hitting a second to left field, trying to reach second and being tagged out by the second baseman, but not before the runner on second was able to score the Hilltoppers first run of the day, cutting the Rambelles lead down to 4-1.
 
Bottom of the 2nd:
  • Scheurer would hit a single into center field with Barnhill on deck to bat. Barnhill would be walked, advancing Scheurer to second.
  • Garcia would also be walked, advancing Barnhill to second and Scheurer to third with only one out.
  • Fernandez would reach first on a fielders' choice with Garcia advancing to second and Barnhill to third, but Scheurer would be thrown out as she was approaching home plate.
Top of the 3rd Inning:
  • St. Edwards found their second wind of the day, hitting a single into center field.
  • A throwing error from Hill would result in a Hilltopper advancing to second with the runner on first scoring the Hilltoppers second run of the game.
  • A pop up to the second baseman gave St. Edward's their first out of the inning with a runner on second.
  • The runner on second would advance to third base on a wild pitch, with the batter being walked.
  • The runner on first would steal second shortly after being walked, and the runner on third would score another run off of a wild pitch to cut the Rambelles lead down to one, 4-3.
  • The Rambelles would rebound quickly and catch two fly balls to end the top of the 3rd, one to the first baseman and the other in left field.
 
Bottom of the 3rd Inning:
  • Strother would make it to first on an error by the shortstop with Lerma on deck for Angelo State.
  • Lerma would pop up to the third baseman, giving Shope a chance to smack a double into deep center field, advancing to third on the throw to catch Strother heading home, unsuccessfully though as Strother would beat the throw and extend the Rambelles lead back to two runs, 5-3.
 
Top of the 4th inning:
The Rambelles would rally behind Hill and quickly put three up and three down as one Hilltopper would pop up to the first baseman, and the other two batters would fly out to the center fielder and left fielder.
 
Bottom of the 4th:
  • Burns would start the bottom of the 4th with a single into center field with Garcia up to bat behind her. Garcia would be hit by a pitch, advancing Burns to second.
  • Ashlynn Box would hit a single off of a bunt and beat the throw to first, advancing Burns to third and Garcia to second base.
  • Strother would reach first on a fielders' choice, advancing Box to second and Garcia to third. Burns would be thrown out at home attempting to score.
 
Top of the 5th Inning:
The Rambelles would rally once again and quickly take care of the Hilltoppers offensive attempt to score, with one batter grounding out to second, another popping up to the first baseman, and the third flying out to the center fielder.
 
Bottom of the 5th Inning:
  • Shope would be walked with Scheurer on deck to bat. Scheurer would ground out the second baseman, advancing Shope to second base.
  • Barnhill would hit another home run and score two RBI and extend the Rambelles lead to 7-3 over the Hilltoppers, scoring Shope from second base.
 
Top of the 7th Inning:
With a batter on first due to a walk, Hill would quickly take care of the next two batters as they would both be struck out swinging, and the final out of the game would come as a line drive to the third basemans glove, ending the second game in favor for the Rambelles, defeating the Hilltoppers 7-3.

  • Hatty Shope had three at-bats with one run, one hit, and one RBI.
  • Courtney Barnhill had two at-bats with two runs, one hit, two RBI, and one home run.

  • Meagan Hill pitched for seven innings, throwing two strikeouts and allowing only four hits. Hill faced 27 batters.
 
Up Next:
The Rambelles hit the road as they travel to Kingsville, Texas for a three game series and Laredo, Texas for a two game series. The Rambelles will face the Texas A&M Kingsville Javelinas on Friday, March 13 in two games, and one game on Saturday, March 14, then travel to play the Texas A&M International Dustdevils on Sunday, March 15. Game times for Friday are at 5 and 7:30 p.m., 1 p.m on Saturday, and Noon and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
