SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State Rambelle softball team opened the George & Ola McCorkle challenge with a split home series on day one. The Rambelles move to a 2-2 overall record.
Game One against Texas A&M International:
With
Avery Zeigler on base after hitting a single into left field in the bottom of the first inning,
Courtney Barnhill smacked a triple to the fence, scoring Zeigler. Barnhill scored shortly afterwards on an error from the second baseman.
With
Genesis Armendariz in the circle for the Rambelles at the top of the second, Angelo States defense showed they were ready to play, as three batters came and went on three fly outs in the infield. In the bottom of the second,
Madison Fernandez cranked a ball over the fence to hit her first collegiate home run of her career. Following Fernandez's lead, senior
Jade Strother also cranked a home run over the fence to bring the Rambelles to a 4-1 lead over the Dustdevils.
In the bottom of the fourth inning,
Ashlyn Lerma hit a single down the third base line, where shortly afterwards stole second. Barnhill grounded out to the third baseman to advance Lerma into scoring position, where
Ashlynn Box cranked a ball deep into left field to score Lerma on a single to give the Rambelles a 5-1 lead over the Dustdevils.
The Dustdevils came back with a vengeance in the top of the seventh inning, scoring five runs to take the lead from Angelo State, 8-5. The Rambelles attempted a valiant comeback to take the lead back from the Dustdevils, but their defense proved too much for the Rambelles as Angelo State fell to Texas A&M International in game one of the George McCorkle Challenge, 8-5.
Key Players:
- Lerma had four at-bats, registering one hit, scoring one run, and grabbing a stolen base.
- Zeigler had four at-bats, registering one hit and scoring one run.
- Barnhill had three at-bats, scoring one run and registering one hit and a triple.
- Armendariz threw for 6.1 innings, throwing two strikeouts.
Game Two against the University of Texas Permian Basin:
Haylie Mitchell began game two for the Rambelles by stealing second base after being walked in the bottom of the first inning. With
Ashlynn Box smacking a double into deep center field, Mitchell scored a run for the Rambelles to take a 1-0 lead over the Falcons. With two runners on base,
Madison Fernandez hit another home run to score three more runs for Angelo State, taking a 4-0 lead over the Falcons.
Makayla Corbin and the Rambelle defense quickly squashed the Falcons attempts to get on base in the top of the second, with two runners grounding out to the third baseman and the shortstop, and the last flying out to center field.
Hatty Shope hit a single into center field, advancing
Bailey Martinez to second base after being walked.
Courtney Barnhill would walk to first, advancing Martinez and Shope to second and third, loading the bases. Box hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Martinez and extending ASU's lead to 5-0 over UTPB.
In the bottom of the third,
Mykayla Stroud smack a ball into the outfield, registering a double for the Rambelles. Martinez stepped up to the plate and hit a single into center field, resulting in Stroud scoring another run for the Rambelles to extend Angelo States lead to 6-0.
Corbin and the Rambelle defense showed their skills and training in the top of the fourth inning, as several Falcon batters hit fly balls out to the right fielder, keeping one runner on base. Corbin showed her pitching skills with the final batter however, striking her out swinging for the fences.
Shope hit a single down the third baseline in the bottom of the sixth, afterwards stealing second. Barnhill came up to bat and smacked a double deep into deep right center field, scoring Shope from second and clutching the win for Angelo State as the Rambelles defeated the Falcons 8-0 to end the game.
