KINGSVILLE, Texas – Texas A&M – Kingsville avoid the sweep against the top-ranked Angelo State baseball team as the Rams fell in the final game of the series, losing 6-2 on Sunday afternoon at Nolan Ryan Field.
The Rams move to 17-3 overall on the year and 12-3 in Lone Star Conference play while the Javelinas improve to 13-6, 12-6 LSC.
TAMUK scored a majority of its runs in the first inning, jumping out a 4-0 lead. After opening the inning with back-to-back walks and a sac bunt, the Javelinas scored two runs off a single to right field. After an RBI single up the middle, TAMUK scored the final run of the inning after a stolen base forced an error by the Rams, allowing another run to cross the plate.
ASU's bats were quiet in the final game of the series, tallying seven hits in the contest. In the fifth inning,
Thomas Cain reached on an error by the Javelinas, stole a base at second before eventually coming around to score on another TAMUK error to make it 4-1.
The Javelinas added to their lead in the top of the sixth, scoring two more runs off an RBI single and a wild pitch to extend its lead to 6-1.
With one out in the top of the seventh,
Jackson Hardy hit a double to left field and eventually came around to score off a single by Cain.
The Rams struggled to capitalize at the plate, leaving nine runners on base in the contest.
Jesse Meyer threw the majority of the game for ASU, tossing 4 2/3 innings in relief while allowing four hits with two runs while striking out six batters. Also coming in was
Carson Childers who threw 2 1/3 innings with one hit and two strikeouts.
The Rams return home next weekend as they host St. Edward's in a three game series beginning Friday, Apr. 1 at Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium.
