SAN ANGELO, Texas – The 11
th-ranked Angelo State baseball team found some offense late against St. Edwards, defeating the Hilltoppers 14-3 in seven innings in game two of the series on Friday night at Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium.
The Rams clinch the series over SEU as they improve to 19-3 overall on the season and 14-3 in Lone Star Conference play. The Hilltoppers drop to 7-14 overall and 7-13 in LSC play.
SEU struck first in the first inning, hitting a double to right center to score the first run of the game. The Hilltoppers followed that up with another run in the fourth, a solo home run to right field to go up 2-0.
The Rams came alive at the plate after that, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the lead. After loading the bases
Jackson Hardy was hit by a pitch for the first run before
Reese Johnson hit a two-RBI single to Center field.
ASU came back in the fifth to score three more as
Josh Elvir hit a solo homer to center field before
Jordan Williams hit sacrifice fly, scoring
Nick Seginowich while
Koby Kelton hit a shot to right field to score
Aaron Walters and take a 6-2 lead.
The Rams opened the scoring even more in the sixth inning, tallying eight total runs, only three of which came from hits by ASU. Walters started the scoring with an RBI double before the Rams tallied a run off of a wild pitch, a run of another hit by pitch, two runs off of bases loaded walks, and a run off an error by SEU's first baseman. Elvir closed out the inning with a two-RBI single to center field to make it 14-2 in favor of the Angelo State.
Trent Baker improved to 7-0 on the season, throwing six complete innings for ASU while giving up two runs off of three hits and collecting eight strikeouts on the day. Elvir and Johnson each finished with three RBIs on the night while Elvir led in hits with three.
The Rams and Hilltoppers conclude their series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch at Foster Field set for 1 p.m.
