Rams Sweep UTPB with Wins in Games Two and Three of the Series on Sunday

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The 11th-ranked Angelo State baseball team swept UT Permian Basin on Sunday, finishing game two 5-0 before closing out the series with a 17-5 victory at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
 
The Rams extended their winning streak to seven games as they improve to 31-6 overall on the season and 25-5 in the Lone Star Conference heading into the final week of the regular season.
 
GAME TWO: ASU 5, UTPB 0
The second game of the series started on Saturday night before eventually being paused due to rain midway through the fourth inning and was finished before game three.
 
Benjamin Elder started on the mound for ASU, tossing four hitless innings while totaling five strikeouts.
 
Josh Elvir got the Rams on the board in the third inning, hitting a two-run shot to right field, scoring Jackson Hardy in the process.
 
The Rams loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth inning before Reese Johnson took a pitch off the arm to bring in a run before play was halted.
 
Seginowich added a home run in the fifth inning to give the Rams a 4-0 lead before Parker Bramlett grounded out in the eighth, scoring Thomas Cain.
 
Mat Szabo notched his first win of the season, tossing five scoreless innings while allowing only one hit with a season-high 10 strikeouts.
 
GAME THREE: ASU 17, UTPB 5
Home runs were the difference in game three of the series, as the Rams hit back-to-back-to-back homers in the third inning starting with Elvir, followed by Aaron Walters and Nick Seginowich.
 
The Rams also scored a run on a ground out by Ryan Neitsch, and a hit-by-pitch and wild pitch with bases loaded. Elvir came back up in the inning, hitting a three-run home run for his second long ball of the inning.
 
Elvir is now tied for the most career home runs in Lone Star Conference history, totaling 43 in his career.
 
Down 10-0, the Falcons scored their first runs of the series in the fourth inning, hitting a two-run homer to left field before added another run on a throwing error by the Rams.
 
The Rams pulled away again in the sixth inning as Koby Kelton and Hardy both hit two-RBI doubles while Elvir collected his sixth RBI of the game off a single to right field.
 
Walters and Elvir both finished with three hits in the game while Hardy totaled four RBIs and three runs scored.
 
The Rams will close out the regular season next week as they host Arkansas Fort Smith in a three-game series beginning Friday, May, 7 at Foster Field.
