SAN ANGELO, Texas – The third-seeded Rams opened the first night of the NCAA South-Central Regional Baseball Championship with a big win over second-seed West Texas A&M, defeating the Buffs 10-2 at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
ASU has now scored double-digit runs in six of its seven playoff games, improving to 40-7 overall on the season.
The Rams struck first early on in the game as Aaron Walters grounded out to third base in the first inning, scoring Jackson Hardy who singled to lead off. Nick Seginowich added another run with a sac-fly to center field to give ASU a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the third inning, Josh Elvir extended the Rams lead with a solo shot to right-center, hitting his 44th career home run which set a new Lone Star Conference record.
Scoring continued for the Rams in the fourth as Parker Bramlett hit a sac bunt to the pitcher, scoring Nick Novak while Koby Kelton came around on an error.
Trent Baker started on the mound for the Rams, throwing 4 1/3 innings while giving up no runs off of four hits while striking out five batters. His time was cut short, due to a lightning delay in the fifth inning.
After the delay, Carson Childers pitched 1 2/3 innings, getting the Rams out of a situation with runners at the corners, earning his sixth win of the season. Picking up the save was Aaron Munson who tossed 2.2 innings in relief.
WT finally got on the board in the seventh inning, scoring on a bases-loaded walk and a single to shallow right field for the Buffs' two runs of the game.
The Rams capped off the game with four runs in the ninth inning, scoring on sac-flies by Hardy and Aaron Walters while Jordan Williams hit a two-RBI double down the right-field line.
ASU will face top-seeded Colorado Mesa in game four of the regional tomorrow, weather permitting. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
