SAN ANGELO – In a matchup of preseason top-five teams in the Lone Star Conference this afternoon, the Belles showed why they were the conference's preseason favorites against UAFS, sweeping the Lady Lions and improving to 2-0 in conference play.
The first two sets proved to be relatively even for both sides, but the difference proved to be a couple of scoring runs the Belles put together to take both sets.
The Lady Lions' were at their best in set three, holding onto a lead until the score was evened at 9-9 in the set, which happened to be during a 6-0 Belles run to give them the lead in the set, one they would not concede for the remainder of the match.
The Belles offense was firing on all cylinders, with the team posting a season-high .349 hitting percentage as a team, despite the Lions out blocking the Belles 8-4 and recording 39 digs while the Belles managed 47.
Sophia Berg and
Kailyn Gilbreath tied for the game high in kills with 11, both recording attack percentages of .455 and .524, respectively. Berg's 11 kills tied for a season high and is the fourth time the middle blocker has reached double digits in that category.
Gilbreath added in a game-high 21 assists as well, recording her fifth double-double of the season. The Fort Worth native leads the team in kills (98) and assists (280).
Baleigh Allen posted an identical attacking stat line for the second game in a row, recording seven kills in nine attempts while not committing an error, good enough for an otherworldly .778 attack percentage.
Defensively, Allen and
Elsa Lamphere recorded a solo block each; and
Makenna Hanssen and
Delaney Fuller each recorded a game-high ten digs.
The Belles improve to 9-2 on the season and 2-0 in LSC play; they hit the road next week for matches against Midwestern State and Cameron.
