Home Runs, Hogan’s One-Hitter Propels #17 Rambelles to Sweep of Mustangs

Silver City, New Mexico – Coming off a pair of victories on Friday against UTPB, the Angelo State softball team was golden in Silver City, hitting eight home runs over the two games to score 19 runs and sweep Western New Mexico to cap off a perfect weekend for the Rambelles.

Three hits and three Rambelle errors across the first and third innings saw the Mustangs grab an early 2-0 lead after three frames.

With two outs in the fourth inning, Keilei Garcia singled to right field to set up Lindsey Evans, who homered for the sixth time to tie the game at 2-all.

Katie Burris led off the fifth inning with a double to the right-centerfield gap in her first collegiate start. Still, it was once again with two out that the Rambelles struck, with Paxton Scheurer homering for the third game in a row to score the pair of runs and give the Rambelles a lead they would not relinquish.

Ashlynn Box would make it back-to-back home runs, leaving the yard to make it 5-2.

Neither team would score until the final frame; Scheurer started the inning off with a double before scoring on Box's second home run in as many at-bats. The homer was her sixth of the season, and this marks her first multi-home run game for the Christoval native.

Madison Fernandez would follow with a double before Garcia drew a walk to put two runners on; Evans would hit her seventh home run to clear the bases, this, like Box, also marking her first multi-homerun game.

Burris would double later in the inning and score the Rambelles' final run on a single by pinch hitter Victoria Mosqueda.

The Mustangs would pull back a pair of runs in the final inning but did not overcome the nine-run deficit.

Genesis Armendariz picked up her second complete-game victory of the weekend, allowing nine hits and two earned runs while striking out nine Mustang batters.

The Rambelles started the scoring off in game two with Ashlyn Lerma scoring on a Box double; Fernandez quickly followed with her seventh home run to make it 3-0.

An Ashton Dirner single in the second inning preceded a Scheurer home run, her fourth game in a row with a home run.

The Rambelles would score a pair of runs in the third inning via an error and a fielder's choice.

With a 7-0 lead entering the fourth inning, Scheurer would hit a solo home run, her second of the game, to extend the lead to the final score of 8-0.

The seven-homerun weekend for the Rambelles third baseman gives her 16 on the season, sixth-most in a season in program history. The two-homerun game for the Mansfield native is her fourth multi-homerun game of the season, and she has driven in 50 of the Rambelles' 188 runs this season.

Returning to the "Land of Enchantment," where she picked up her first collegiate win last season, pitcher Torrey Hogan mystified the Mustang lineup, carrying a perfect game into the fifth and final inning before allowing a single with one out. The Lubbock native recorded her second shutout of the season, striking out a pair of Mustangs and only needing 69 pitches.

The Rambelles improve to 23-5 overall on the season and 8-4 in LSC play. This weekend, they return to Mayer Stadium to host #1 UT Tyler and #20 Texas A&M-Commerce.
