SAN ANGELO, Texas – The 10
th-ranked Angelo State baseball team dropped the first game of the series against Texas A&M – Kingsville on Friday, falling 10-4 at Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium.
With the loss, the Rams move to 21-6 overall and 19-6 in Lone Star Conference play, snapping an eight-game win streak.
Benjamin Elder had a strong start on the mound for the Rams, keeping the Javelinas off the board for the first five innings.
The Rams took the lead early as
Aaron Walters put two runs on the board with a two-run blast to right center, scoring
Austin Beck who singled to get on base.
After five scoreless innings, the Javelinas found some offense of their own, scoring five runs in the sixth inning to take the lead, capping off the inning with a two-run homer to left field.
TAMUK added one more run in the sixth, scoring on a wild pitch to take the lead to 6-2.
Elder finished throwing 5 2/3 innings with six hits and four earned runs while striking out three batters. He moves to 4-1 overall on the season after taking his first loss.
Going against the top pitching staff in the LSC, the Rams struggled to find offense after the first, breaking a streak of five scoreless innings in the bottom of the seventh. Walters singled up the middle to score
Tripp Clark who got on base with a walk after pinching hitting.
The Javelinas added an insurance run in the top of the eighth, hitting another homer, this time a solo shot to left field.
ASU had a chance to add a couple more runs in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases with two outs before a flyout ended the inning, leaving the lead with the Javelinas.
TAMUK continued to find some offense in the top of the ninth, scoring three more runs to extend their lead.
The Rams got the first two batters on base to begin the bottom of the ninth as Beck and Walters both walked.
Kamden Kelton brought one run in, hit a sac-fly to center field but the Rams were unable to complete the rally in the end.
Both teams will be back at it tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
