Rams Drop Close Game Against WT, 2-0

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Playing one of the biggest regular-season games in the Lone Star Conference, the seventh-ranked Angelo State baseball team came up short against 14th-ranked West Texas A&M, falling 2-0 at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.

With the loss, the Rams move to 27-8 overall and 25-8 in LSC play and the Buffs improve to 28-7, 26-7 LSC.

After a scoreless first inning, the Buffs got on the board first after hitting an infield single towards first base to take a 1-0 advantage.

Both pitchers dialed it in from there as neither team could bring in a run through the seventh inning.

Benjamin Elder started on the mound for ASU, throwing seven innings of work while giving up only two runs off four hits with three punchouts.

WT had a chance to add to their lead in the fifth, but the Rams caught the Buffs out of position on the base path, tagging the runner out to end the inning.

The Rams had a big opportunity in the next inning, loading the bases on singles by Koby Kelton and Aaron Walters and a walk by Justin Lee but a late called strikeout on a full count kept ASU from tying the game.

WT led off the eighth inning with a hit, loading the bases with another single and walk before a hit-by-pitch drove in the second run for the Buffs to go up 2-0.

Pitching in relief for the Rams was Kyle Moseley who threw two innings, giving up two hits, a walk, and a strikeout.

Walters led off the bottom of the ninth inning, taking a pitch off his back shoulder to take first base. The Rams worked back-to-back full counts but couldn't add another baserunner as a strikeout ended the game.

The Rams and Buffs will be back at it tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
