SAN ANGELO, Texas – The sixth-ranked Angelo State baseball team stayed in the winner's bracket of the 2022 Lone Star Conference Tournament on Friday, defeating West Texas A&M 14-5 at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
The Rams improve to 44-10 overall on the season as they advance to the championship game set for Saturday at 1 p.m.
Aaron Walters started the scoring for the Rams, hitting a single to center field to score Austin Beck before Justin Lee launched a ball over the left-field wall to give the Rams a quick 3-0 lead in the third inning.
The Buffs found their first run in the next inning, hitting a solo shot to left-center.
In the fifth inning, Kamden Kelton bounced the ball over the left-field fence for a ground-rule double, scoring two more runs. The home runs kept on coming in the sixth inning as Justin Harris hit a solo shot to left field before Koby Kelton hit a two-run shot to give the Rams an 8-1 lead.
Aaron Munson started on the mound for the Rams, throwing six innings of work with four hits and only one earned run.
WT fought back in the bottom half of the frame, hitting a three-run homer to make it 8-4.
In the seventh, the Rams added four more runs, scoring on an error and a wild pitch before a single by Tripp Clark and a sac-fly by Beck made it 12-4.
The Rams wrapped up their scoring in the eighth as Clark hit a sac-fly to center field to score Jordan Williams before Beck singled to bring home Thomas Cain.
Carson Childers pitched two innings in relief with no hits and two strikeouts while Price Siemering closed out the game with one hit, one run, and two strikeouts in the ninth.
ASU will await the winner of the elimination game between the Buffs and St. Edward's to determine who they face for the LSC tournament title.
