SAN ANGELO – In their conference home opener on Saturday afternoon, the Angelo State volleyball team faced off against the team that defeated them in last season's Lone Star Conference Tournament, UT Permian Basin, which was the Rambelles' previous conference game inside Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
The Rambelles looked strong early as they took sets one and two, with set two being notable for the Belles hitting .323 while they held the Falcons to a negative attack percentage, who committed eight errors and only five kills in the second frame.
After dropping set one 25-20 and two 25-21, the Falcons rebounded to take set three 25-23 despite a late comeback attempt from the Belles. The Belles hit .235 in the final set and .252 for the match to seal the set and the match with a 25-17 effort in set four.
Belles outside hitter
Sydney Mundkowsky turned in a career-best performance against the Falcons, burying a career-high 22 kills while hitting .459 for the match. The junior also contributed five blocks, with the Belles owning ten blocks to the visitor's eight.
This is the Gatesville native's third-career match with double-digit kills, besting her previous career-best of 15 kills against Central Missouri two weeks ago. It is also the most for a Belle in a single match this season.
Joining Mundkowsky in double digits for kills was freshman
Kaila Garnett. Garnett had 12 kills and hit .300 for the match.
Freshman
Kayla Baer led the squad with 25 assists, while fellow setter
Laney Dale recorded a double-double with 21 assists and 13 digs.
Cate Boldrick, coming off a season-best performance against Western New Mexico, led the team with eight blocks while also having five kills.
Four Belles reached double figures in digs, with
Hannah Kinnison and
Caleigh Enax tied for the most on the team with 15.
Jaedyn Woolley, who entered the match with 17 digs on the season, recorded 14 in this match, and Dale had 13 digs as well.
As of writing, the Belles are only one of three teams in the LSC to have a 2-0 start, joining UAFS and Texas A&M International.
The Belles are 6-8 on the season and 2-0 in LSC play. They are on the road next Wednesday to face Texas Woman's before returning home next Saturday to host Midwestern State.
