SAN ANGELO, Texas – On an afternoon that saw a season worst shooting percent from the field, the Angelo State women's basketball team leaned on their defense, which forced 25 turnovers, to best Western New Mexico 56-52 Saturday afternoon at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
The Rambelles improve to 18-3 on the season and move to 13-2 in Lone Star Conference action. The Mustangs fall to 5-13 on the year and are now 3-11 in LSC play.
40 MINUTE RUNDOWN
- Madeline Stephens got things started for the Rambelles, scoring the first four points to give the Rambelles a 4-2 lead.
- Sawyer Lloyd put the Rambelles up 15-13 with 2:52 remaining in the first quarter after hitting a jumper on the fast break.
- The Rambelles did not score from that point, the Mustangs took advantage scoring eight straight to take a 21-15 lead into quarter number two.
- Lloyd, Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant, and Keniah Williams all made buckets in the second, bringing the Mustang lead down to one, 23-22 with 5:13 before the half.
- Williams scored four points down the stretch as the teams combined to score only 15 points in the quarter, WNMU leading 27-26 at the half.
- The Rambelles came out of the half on fire on both the offensive and defensive ends, going on an 11-0 run to start the quarter to take the lead 37-27 with 5:51 remaining.
- Williams again scored to close out the third this time with the Rambelles leading by nine, 44-35.
- Stephens made the only bucket for the Rambelles amidst a 10-2 Mustang run that brought the game back to just three points, 48-45 at the six-minute mark in the fourth.
- McGhee-Pleasant scored five straight to pull the Rambelles back ahead by seven, leading 54-47 with just under three minutes to play.
- McGhee-Pleasant would hit two free throws to put the game out of reach, the Rambelles victorious 56-52.
GAME STATS
- McGhee-Pleasant led all scorers and matched her season high with 22 points and eight rebounds, shooting 4-8 from three-point range, the most triples she has made in a single game this year.
- Lloyd had 14 points, six steals, and six rebounds as she was able to impact many facets of the game.
- Stephens scored eight points, pulled in 11 rebounds, and had three steals in 31 minutes of action Saturday afternoon.
- Williams had another great game off the bench, scoring eight points, pulling in eight rebounds.
- The Rambelles forced the Mustangs into 25 turnovers, the third most on the season for WNMU.
- The Mustangs have caused problems for the Rambelles in both their matchups, forcing the Rambelles into their two worst shooting performances with today's 29.6 shooting percentage the lowest this season.
- McGhee-Pleasant went 4-8 from beyond the arc, the rest of the squad struggled, going 0-12 to combine for 20 percent shooting from deep.
- The Rambelles turned the ball over a season low 12 times and were able to score 27 points off turnovers.
