SAN ANGELO, Texas – After another strong fourth quarter performance and huge contributions from the big three, the Angelo State women's basketball team snapped Texas Woman's 21-game winning streak, downing the Pioneers 73-69 Thursday evening at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena.
The Rambelles improve to 21-5 on the season and are now 16-4 in Lone Star Conference play. The Pioneers fall to 23-2 on the season and are now 18-1 in LSC action.
40 MINUTE RUNDOWN
- The Pioneers got thing started at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena before Sawyer Lloyd scored four straight to bring the Rambelles back within one, trailing 7-6 with 5:14 to go in the first.
- Madeline Stephens and Aicha Ndir scored down the stretch as the Rambelles took a narrow 13-12 lead into the second quarter.
- Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant scored six straight for the Rambelles over a five-minute stretch as the Rambelles kept with TWU, trailing 25-21 with 2:52 before the halftime break.
- Lloyd and Stephens combined to score five down the stretch as the Rambelles trailed by just one, 27-26, at the half.
- The Pioneers scored seven straight in the third to jump ahead 38-30 halfway through quarter number three.
- TWU went up by as many as 12 before Lloyd took over, scoring 10 points down the stretch to give her 22 points, pulling the Rambelles within three to close out the quarter trailing 49-46.
- McGhee-Pleasant hit a triple to keep the Rambelles within two, trailing 53-51 at the 7:35 mark.
- The Rambelles would go on a 7-0 run capped by a Stephens triple to take their first lead since the 6:24 mark in the second.
- Lloyd and McGhee-Pleasant continued the offense for the Rambelles, putting the home team up seven, 68-61 with 1:37 remaining.
- McGhee-Pleasant, Lloyd, and Stephens all hit free throws down the stretch as the Rambelles saw a 73-69 victory over the line, snapping TWU's 21-game winning streak.
GAME STATS
- Lloyd set a new career high and scored the third most points in a single game this season in the conference with 34 points on 13-22 shooting, including a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line.
- McGhee-Pleasant was one off tying her career high as she earned double-double number nine on the season finishing with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
- Stephens rounded out the big three with 14 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two blocks against the Pioneers.
- Kyla Cobb played a career high 31 minutes for the Rambelles, grabbing five rebounds and dishing out three assists.
- The Rambelles once more played their best when it mattered most, outscoring the fourth ranked team in the country 28-21 in the fourth quarter.
- The Rambelles shot 44 percent from the field, limiting the Pioneers to 38 percent, including just 17 percent from beyond the arc.
