Conroe, Texas – The Angelo State softball team ended their weekend 3-3 as they dropped their first game to Pittsburg State 3-2 before ending the weekend on a high note with a 4-3 defeat of MSU Denver.
The Rambelles fell behind early in game one against the Gorillas, as a pair of bunts and a throwing error led to the Gorillas notching the first run on a sacrifice fly in the home half of the first inning.
The Rambelles responded in the third inning with a
Tatiana Trotter leadoff single and an
Ashlyn Lerma sacrifice bunt to put Trotter on second base; the freshman would score on a single by fellow freshman
Layni Tanner.
Tanner would then steal second and score on a single by
Paxton Scheurer to give the Rambelles a 2-1 lead, one they would hold until the sixth inning.
The Gorilla would string together four-straight hits to plate two runs to take the lead and, ultimately, the game.
Making her first start inside the circle for Angelo State,
Cheyenne Floyd gave up eight hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out three batters in 5.1 innings.
Torrey Hogan relieved Floyd, recording the final two outs of the inning.
Looking to rebound, the Rambelles jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two against MSU Denver.
Lerma walked and then stole second base before advancing to third on an error by the Roadrunner catcher. She would score on a Scheurer RBI single; Scheurer would double the lead when the Rambelles executed a double steal with the Rambelles' third baseman and
Madison Fernandez.
The score remained 2-0 until the fourth inning when
Bailey Martinez led off the inning with a double to left field. The senior would score on a
Keilei Garcia sacrifice fly later in the inning.
The Roadrunners pushed across a pair of runs when pitcher Lauren Burt's hit down the right field line bounced off the first-base bag and over Fernandez to plate two runs.
Fernandez would give the Rambelles an insurance run in the top half of the fifth with an RBI double, doubling the Rambelles' lead to 4-2.
A two-out infield single by the Roadrunners in the bottom of the sixth halved the deficit, but the Rambelles hung onto the victory.
Genesis Armendariz improved to 2-0 on the season; the all-region pitcher allowed nine hits and struck out seven in seven innings.
The Rambelles will be at home next weekend for the George and Ola McCorkle Challenge Presented by Bahlmann Cleaners.
