SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team finished their opening weekend of Lone Star Conference play with a doubleheader sweep of Midwestern State on Friday afternoon at Mayer Field, winning by 3-1 and 10-0 scorelines.
The Mustangs opened the scoring in the third inning of game one, scoring their first run of the weekend on a fielder's choice. They would hold onto the lead until the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Rambelles would come back and score three runs.
Singles by
Averie Gunther and
Erin Plunkett sandwiched a
Tatiana Trotter walk to load the bases for
Carter Smith.
Smith would single to the Mustangs shortstop to score a run, and an error on the same play allowed the Rambelles to score another run and take the lead.
Zoey De Baca would drive in another run on a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1, the game's final scoreline.
Torrey Hogan picked up her first win of the season, pitching 4.2 innings in relief of starter

The Rambelles' bats exploded in the series finale. Having scored only six runs in the first two games of the series, the Rambelles pushed across five runs in the first inning of the series finale.
Carter Smith and
Erin Plunkett – hitting in the top two spots in the lineup for the first time for ASU – led game three off with back-to-back singles; both advanced into scoring position on a Gunther sacrifice bunt.
Trotter would single up the middle to drive in both runs; she would score later in the inning on a De Baca single.
Layni Tanner would draw a walk to extend the inning for
Ashton Dirner, who singled in both De Baca and Tanner to make it 5-0.
The score stayed 5-0 until the third inning, when the Rambelles would match their run total from the opening frame.
Laylonna Applin and De Baca walked, and Tanner singled to load the bases with no outs in the fourth inning; all three would score on a Dirner double down the left field line.
The Rambelles' senior center fielder ended the game with five RBIs, a new career high.
Smith would single up the middle to score Dirner, and Smith would plate the Rambelles' final run on a Gunther single up the middle.
Cheyenne Floyd and
Matie Wolkow, for the second time this series and third time this weekend, combined for the shutout. Floyd picked up her eighth win of the season, only allowing three hits in four innings of work. Wolkow closed out the game for the Rambelles, pitching the final inning and recording a strikeout.
The Rambelles are now 12-1 on the season and 3-0 in LSC play; they are back in action on Tuesday when they host UT Permian Basin.
