Five-Run Seventh Inning Fuels No. 21 Rambelles’ Comeback Against Lady Chaps

Lubbock, Texas – The Angelo State softball team opened their weekend in Lubbock with a thrilling, come-from-behind 9-7 win over Lubbock Christian on Saturday afternoon at Maner Park.

Trailing 5-4 entering the final frame, the Rambelles' offense exploded, scoring five runs on five hits before they recorded an out in the inning.

Back-to-back doubles by Ashton Dirner and Carter Smith scored Dirner to tie the game, and an Averie Gunther single put runners on the corners for Laylonna Applin, who stepped up and hit a three-run home run over the center field fence for her sixth home run of the season.

The next batter, Tatiana Trotter, homered to center field to make it 9-5. The Lady Chaps would score two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Rambelles would hold on for the win.

The Lady Chaps struck first in the contest with a solo home run in the second inning.

A two-out rally in the fourth inning got the Rambelles onto the scoreboard. With runners on first and second, Layni Tanner doubled to drive in both runners; the sophomore second baseman would score after stealing third base and advancing on a throwing error by the LCU catcher.

The Lady Chaps retook the lead with a three-spot in the bottom half of the inning.

Gunther hit an opposite-field home run in the fifth inning to tie the game; however, LCU responded once again, scoring in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead, one they would hold until the seventh inning.

Cheyenne Floyd got the start inside the circle, earning a no-decision after throwing the first four innings and striking out five Lady Chaps while allowing four runs.

Lubbock native Torrey Hogan picked up the win in her hometown, throwing 1.2 innings in relief and allowing one earned run while striking out two batters. Amelia Hatthorn notched the final two outs for the Rambelles en route to her second save of the season.

The Rambelles are now 35-12 on the season and 26-11 in LSC play; the two teams close out the series tomorrow with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
