SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team kicked off their final homestand with a pair of victories over Cameron on Friday afternoon at Mayer Field, winning game one 6-0 before coming from behind to claim a 5-4 win in extra innings.
Averie Gunther and
Tatiana Trotter were plunked in the first inning to set up
Keilei Garcia, who singled to left field to drive in the first run of the game.
A one-out single by
Ashton Dirner would precede an
Abby Brand bunt single, with Dirner scoring on a throwing error by the Aggies' third baseman and Brand advancing to third.
Gunther, the next batter, would double to left center to plate Brand; Gunther would score on a
Laylonna Applin single to make it 5-0.
The Rambelles' final run came courtesy of
Ashton Dirner's second home run of the season, an opposite-field shot that just stayed fair down the right-field line.
Cheyenne Floyd picked up her 18
th win of the season, throwing five shutout innings and allowing six hits and two walks while striking out five Aggies.
Matie Wolkow threw the final two innings in relief, only allowing two baserunners and notching one strikeout.
The Aggies' offense pushed across one run in each of the first four innings of game two, while the Rambelles only mustered runs in the first two frames.
A two-out De Baca single in the first inning and an
Abby Brand groundout in the second inning represented the Rambelles' two runs through the first four innings.
Garcia hit a solo home run to center field in the fifth inning, her eighth home run of the season, to cut the deficit to one.
The Rambelles trailed 4-3 until the seventh inning. Applin led the frame off with a triple to right center; however, the next two Rambelles failed to plate the freshman from third base.
Down to their last out, De Baca stepped up to the plate and doubled to right center to tie the game and force extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Applin would make a nice sliding catch and double up a runner on second base to get the Rambelles out a jam and keep the game tied.
Dirner led the bottom of the eighth off with a full-count walk; Brand would lay down a bunt, and a throwing error by the Aggies' third baseman would see Dirner cross home plate to secure the comeback victory.
Amelia Hatthorn got the start inside the circle, lasting 2.1 innings before being replaced by Gunther, who threw the next 4.2 innings in relief. Wolkow picked up her third win of the season by throwing a scoreless eighth inning.
The Rambelles are now 31-11 on the season and 22-10 in LSC play. They close out their series with Cameron tomorrow at 1 p.m.
