The Matches
• Texas A&M International: The Rambelles will go head-to-head with Texas A&M International to kick-off the annual Angelo Retina/ASU Invitational Thursday evening. This is just the second meeting between the two programs and TAMIU holds a 1-0 advantage. The Dustdevils defeated the 'Belles in five sets in 2007.
• Nebraska-Omaha: ASU will meet Nebraska-Omaha Friday evening at Stephens Arena. The 'Belles are looking for their first victory over the Mavs as UNO is 4-0 against Angelo State. Last season, the Rambelles dropped a 3-0 decision to then-No. 23 Nebraska-Omaha.
• No. 22 Lubbock Christian: The Rambelles and the Lady Chaps square off Saturday morning at the Angelo Retina/ASU Invitational. Angelo State holds the advantage in the all-time series 17-6. The last time the two squads met was in 2006 and ASU came out victorious, 3-1.
• Colorado Mines: Angelo State and Colorado School of Mines will conclude the Angelo Retina/ASU Invitational Saturday evening. This will be the first meeting between the two squads since 2004, when the 'Belles defeated the Orediggers, 3-1.
The Coaches
• Angelo State: Chuck Waddington (Rensselaer, 1993) took over the ASU program in 2008 and has since guided the 'Belles to a 41-30 overall mark. Waddington has guided the Rambelles to back-to-back conference appearances in 2008 and 2009. Under Waddington's tutelage, the 'Belles finished third in the LSC Tournament.
• Texas A&M International: Wendy McManus (Chicago State, 1999) is in her fifth year as head coach at Texas A&M International and has guided the Dustdevils to a 47-79 record thus far. With McManus at the helm, TAMIU finished fourth in the Heartland Conference standings in 2007 earning a conference tournament appearance.
• Nebraska-Omaha: Rose Shires (UTEP, 1985) began her 21st season with Nebraska-Omaha last weekend, improving her career record to 410-230. The winningest coach in UNO history, Shires guided the Mavs to their sixth straight NCAA Tournament appearance last season.
• No. 22 Lubbock Christian: Former Lubbock Christian volleyball standout, Jennifer Lawrence (Lubbock Christian, 1995), is in her seventh season as the Lady Chaps' head coach after guiding them to back-to-back NAIA National Championships collecting her second Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year Award.
• Colorado Mines: After leading Colorado School of Mines to its second-ever NCAA post-season appearance, Jamie Skadeland (North Dakota, 2004) looks to continue her successful path in her third season at the helm of the Oredigger's program. The former Fighting Sioux led CSMU to new single-season records in wins (22) and conference victories (13) last season.
The Program
• The 'Belles are coming off a 2-2 finish at the Florida Southern Classic last weekend.
• ASU defeated Southwest Baptist (3-0) and Montevallo (3-0) after dropping two 3-1 decisions to host Florida Southern and Missouri S&T.
• Sophomores
Chelsea Gibson and
Alex Woolsey were named to the Florida Southern Classic All-Classic Team.
• Gibson tallied 43 kills, two assists, four digs and seven block assists in the tournament, while Woolsey totaled 175 assists, 17 kills, 32 digs, three block assists and two service aces.
• Head coach
Chuck Waddington added assistant coach Qi Wang to his staff over the summer. Wang brings a wealth of experience to ASU as he was the former head coach at Florida Tech, Northern Michigan and Truman State. The China native led Truman State to the national title game in 2002 and 2004, and was named Division II National Coach of the Year in 2002.
• Former East Central standout Holly Hicks also has joined the 'Belles coaching staff as graduate assistant. Hicks enters her first year of coaching with numerous hours of playing time on her resume. The Round Rock, Texas, native competed as a member of the Austin Juniors, one of the top club programs in the state, and earned an athletic scholarship to Texas Tech.
• ASU Volleyball was picked to finish third in the conference behind West Texas A&M and Abilene Christian University.
This Week's Opponents
• Texas A&M International: The Dustdevils are looking for their first win of the 2010 season after falling to 0-4 at the Texas Woman's Tournament in Denton, Texas last weekend. Texas A&M International dropped contests to Arkansas Tech (3-1), Henderson State (3-1) and Harding (3-0) before being swept, 3-0, by Drury to conclude the tournament. The Dustdevils are led by junior outside hitter Tamara da Silva who leads the team with 38 kills and Alexandra Montemayor who owns a team-best 50 digs and seven service aces. Junior transfer Brittany Faison posted 112 assists in her Dustdevils debut at the Texas Woman's Tournament.
• Nebraska-Omaha: After posting a 3-1 mark at the UNO Volleyball Showcase, the Mavericks will square off against Incarnate Word at the Angelo Retina/ASU Invitational before taking on Angelo State. Nebraska-Omaha's single loss came to Northern State University in five sets. The Mavericks were victorious over Newman University (3-0), Midwestern State (3-0) and the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith (3-1). Junior Lizzy Moch's 17 kills, .696 hitting percentage and two block assists helped secure the Mavs win in the final match of the UNO Volleyball Showcase.
• No. 22 Lubbock Christian: The Lady Chaps come into the Angelo Retina/ASU Invitational with a 7-0 mark and are ranked 22nd in the NAIA. After defeating then-No. 7 West Texas A&M in the Lady Buff Classic, Lubbock Christian is off to its best start in program history. Led by senior middle blocker Elissa Loynes (76 kills, 48 digs and seven block assists) and junior setter Jordan Goings (257 assists, 20 kills, seven service aces, 41 digs and eight block assists), the Lady Chaps have earned sweeps in six of their seven victories.
• Colorado Mines: The Orediggers posted a 3-1 record at the Oredigger Volleyball Classic in which Colorado School of Mines defeated Chaminade (3-0), Augustana (S.D.) (3-1) and Minnesota St. Moorhead (3-0) before falling to Southwest Minnesota State (3-0). CSMU is led by senior outside hitter Elizabeth Serra-Hsu, who accumulated 43 kills, two service aces, 36 digs and seven total blocks in the the Oredigger Volleyball Classic. Junior setter and outside hitter Anna Massey registered 137 assists, 13 kills, four service aces, 32 digs and 13 total blocks to help guide Colorado Mines to a 3-1 mark in tournament action.
