SAN ANGELO – Other than
Chelsea Gibson falling just one kill short of reaching 1,000 for her career, Saturday's match against Midwestern State was just about perfect for No. 13 Angelo State at the Junell Center.
The Belles (8-2, 2-0 Lone Star Conference) earned their third straight win with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-14) victory over the Mustangs (2-8, 0-2 LSC). ASU has now swept seven opponents and have won its last nine sets.
Gibson led the Belles with 10 kills in the match and will enter Tuesday's home match against Tarleton State with 999 kills. The senior captain has averaged 2.31 kills per set this season and 2.90 in her career and also added three digs against the Mustangs.
“We came into this match focusing on our side of the court and focusing on what we should be doing,” Gibson said. “I was just trying to help out the team the best I could. We have great passers and setters that get us in position to succeed.”
Alex Woolsey contributed 33 assists on Saturday, a day after reaching 4,000 in her career. Woolsey also had five digs for the Belles, while
Shelby Wilt had 14 digs.
Shelbi Goode added nine kills with
Maddie Huth finishing with seven kills and
Arielle Bond tacking on six kills. Huth had 2.5 blocks for ASU which out-blocked MSU 5-2.

The Belles finished with a team hitting percentage of .323 and continued their strong defensive work by limiting the Mustangs to a .054 percentage. Shelbi Stewart led MSU with five kills while Courtney Haney and Kristan Aduddell each had 10 assists.
“It was our plan to be 2-0 after this first weekend of conference play,” ASU head coach
Chuck Waddington said. “I thought we played very consistent and we served tough to keep them off balance. I was really excited with our crowd support today and last night. They were loud and gave us an advantage. It's really early and there are a lot of good things ahead of us.”
Angelo State returns to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday against Tarleton State at the Junell Center before hosting McMurry in a non-conference match at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
