WICHITA FALLS –
Cerbi Ritchey recorded a career-high 14 kills to help lead No. 19 Angelo State to a 3-1 Lone Star Conference win over Midwestern State on Saturday at the D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Belles (17-6, 9-3 LSC) has now won five consecutive conference matches and sweeps the season series from the Mustangs (12-10, 4-8 LSC). ASU, which had a 93-81 digs advantage in the match and went 2-0 this weekend following a four-set win over Cameron on Friday, has won the past nine meetings against MSU.
"We played pretty clean today and I was pleased with the way we handled the ball and our defensive effort," ASU head coach
Chuck Waddington said. "The message coming into the match was that we need to win the serve and pass battle and I felt like we did that and it made the difference in the match. We served them pretty tough and handled their pressure pretty well. It was a good weekend for us."
Shelby Wilt and
Maggi Jo Keffury each had strong matches for the Belles with Keffury finishing with a career-high 22 digs and 34 assists, while Wilt had 15 digs and 11 assists. Wilt, who became the ASU volleyball program's all-time digs leader on Friday, now has 1,638 digs in her career.
Maddie Huth added 11 kills and hit .296 in the match with freshman
Courtney Bartusiak hitting .300 with nine kills.
Kaelen Valdez tied Keffury with a team-high 22 digs and also added four kills, while
Haley Bianco contributed 16 digs and
Arielle Bond had eight kills. Bartusiak and Bond led the Belles with five blocks each, while Huth and Ritchey both had three.ASU finished the match with a .177 hitting percentage and limited the Mustangs to a .076 percentage.
The fourth and final set belonged to the Belles from the start with ASU taking a 9-4 advantage on an 8-1 run that was capped by a pair of Ritchey kills. The Mustangs managed two points before ASU went on 9-0 run which ended on a Huth kill and gave ASU an 18-7 lead. ASU hit .406 in the final set with only two errors.
ASU led the first set 10-8 before the teams started exchanging points until the Mustangs went on a 4-0 run and took a 16-14 advantage and forced a timeout. The Belles would fall behind 18-15 and before closing to within one but ultimately dropping the set 25-23. Huth and Bartusiak each had three kills in the first set with Valdez pacing the team with six digs.
ASU took a 14-7 advantage with a 6-0 run in the second set with the help of four MSU errors. The Mustangs weren't going away though and closed to 16-13 on a 4-0 run. The Belles responded and extended their lead to 21-15 on a Bartusiak kill and slammed the second-set door with a 4-1 run that gave them a 25-16 win to square the match.
MSU came out fast in the third set, taking a 4-1 advantage before the Belles responded with a 6-0 run and took a 7-4 lead and forced the Mustangs to take a quick timeout. ASU extended its lead to 13-9, but saw MSU tie the set at 13 with another run in the tightly-contested match. Â Momentum then swung in the Belles' favor with a 6-0 run on another Bartusiak kill to take a 19-13 lead. A service error on MSU ended the set at 25-21.
Up Next: The Belles will return to action next week with two home matches. ASU will host its Dig Pink match on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against St. Edward's and then will welcome Texas A&M-Kingsville to the Junell Center at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1.
