SAN ANGELO – The No. 17 Angelo State softball team will open its season on Saturday at the St. Mary's NCAA Division II College Classic in San Antonio.
The Rambelles will play five games over the three-day tournament with the first at 12 p.m. on Saturday. Friday's competition will be Texas A&M-International at 12 p.m. and St. Edward's at 4 p.m. followed by UT-Permian Basin at 12 p.m. and Southeastern Oklahoma State at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Angelo State will conclude the tournament with St. Mary's on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m.
Angelo State returns 10 players from a squad that went 37-18 last season including All-American
Morgan Spearman. The senior hit .387 a year ago with 120 home runs and 10 doubles. Spearman scored 45 runs and stole 25 bases.
Rachel Moore,
Carly Peters and
Darian Dunn will provide some power to the lineup. The trio combined for 20 home runs and 96 RBIs. Moore hit .362 as a sophomore while Peters hit .320. Dunn finished the year with a .304 average and nine doubles.
Three sophomores will return to the starting lineup after seeing significant playing time in 2013.
Lanie Robinson and
Ambra Hill are back at third base and shortstop and
Maddy McGarity will roam the outfield. Robinson was third on the team with 11 doubles and scored 20 runs. Hill was the team's top base steal going a perfect 24-for-24. McGariy finished the season with 36 hits and stole 10 bases.
Senior
Luz'Ce Baca saw action in 32 games last year. The San Angelo native is known for her defense and running ability and will be an asset throughout the season.
Two senior pitchers will provide stability in the circle for ASU.
Sandra Serna, an all-region selection last year, went 22-6 with a 3.16 ERA. The Albuquerque native struck out 105 batters and limited opponents to a .279 batting average.
Mary Kate McKay, a four-year starter, returns after a 14-11 season. The Madill native is third on the ASU career list for innings pitched (491.1) and fifth in career strikeouts(289).
The two will look to guide freshman
Kenedy Urbany. Urbany was a two-time Max Preps All-American and was named the San Antonio Express News Player of the Year from 2011-2013. The Helotes native went 31-3 as a senior with 251 strikeouts.
Micherie Koria and
Megan Granado are two transfers from Howard College. Koria, a 2013 NJCAA Division I Second Team All-American, led the NJCAA with 66 stolen bases. She also hit .468 with 12 doubles. Granado, a 2013 NJCAA Division I First Team All-American, led the nation in doubles (33) and RBIs (112).
Kelci Garza and
Tina Cisneros provide depth after both transferring. Garza played last season at Southern Arkansas and was named the 2013 all-conference utility player of the year. Cisneros played last season at New Mexico State.
Kelly Johnson and
Katlyn Herzog are two freshman that will see time at various positions this season.
Texas A&M-International is coming off a 22-36 season. The Rambelles won all five matchups last season against the Dustdevils. Head coach Scott Libby is in his fifth season at TAMU-International and returns nine players from last year's squad. It will be the first game of four that the two teams will play against each other.
Mariena Gallardo is the top hitter retuning for the Dustdevils. The junior hit .325 last year and was tops on the team with 29 RBIs. Gallardo was also TAMU-International's best pitcher going 7-5 with a 3.98 ERA.
St. Edward's ended the Rambelles season last year at the NCAA South Central Regional final. The Hilltoppers finished the season at 33-23 in the NCAA South Central Super Regional. Head coach Lindsay Gardner in her third season is 64-41 at St. Edward's. The Rambelles own the series lead at 35-12.
SEU returns three pitchers including Heartland Conference Co-Pitcher of the Year in Sarah Debrow. Kaci Olson is the top returning hitter with a .345 average. The sophomore had seven doubles, two home runs and 17 RBIs last season.
UT-Permian Basin was 14-38 last season. The Falcons defeated the Rambelles for only the second time last season. UTPB returns its top pitcher in Desiree Valero. Valero went 9-21 last season with a 3.44 ERA. The Falcons top hitter, Taleas Marble, hit .333 with five home runs and 20 RBIs.
Southeastern Oklahoma is coming off a 45-9 season and the school's first Great American Conference championship. The Savage Storm, ranked No. 10 in the NFCA preseason poll, returns the 2013 GAC Pitcher of the Year in Jacee Bennett and Newcomer of the Year Mindy McElroy. SEOSU is 3-15 all-time against ASU with the last win coming in 2008.
Head coach Ron Faubion is the Savage Storm's all-time winningest coach at 585-239 and has a career record of 706-279.
St. Mary's, the 2013 Heartland Conference champions, went 45-15 overall. The Rattlers return honorable mention All-American Emily Brittain and Heartland Conference Player of the Year Nicole Sardelich.
The Rambelles own a 30-27 edge in the overall series with St. Mary's but the Rattlers took two of three last season.
Angelo State will play Texas A&M-International on Saturday at 2 p.m. followed by St. Edward's at 4 p.m. Sunday's opponents will be UT-Permian Basin at 12 p.m. and No. 10 Southeastern Oklahoma State at 2 p.m. The tournament will conclude with a matchup with St. Mary's at 2 p.m. on Monday.
