SAN ANGELO – The No. 6 Angelo State softball team swept Saturday's doubleheader 2-1 and 4-2 to split the season series with Tarleton State at Mayer Field.
The Rambelles (24-7-1, 9-6-1 LSC) bounced back from Friday's two losses by limiting Tarleton State (18-14, 5-5 LSC) to a combined three runs on six hits. ASU is now 13-5 this season at Mayer Field.
"I was proud of the way we bounced back especially the two pitchers," ASU head softball coach Travis Scott said after the games. "Brandy (Marlett) and Kenedy (Urbany) both struggled yesterday and the way they responded today was big for us."
Brandy Marlett held the TexAnns to just one hit while facing 22 batters. She struck out five and only walked two in the complete game. The Rambelles scored in the bottom of the first. Megan Granado led off with a double and scored on a dropped fly ball by TSU's centerfielder.
Tarleton State tried to answer in the third. Erika Menchaca reached on an error and was sitting on third base after a wild pitch. Kathy Thomas hit a fly ball to left field that was caught by Rachel Moore. Menchaca tagged but Moore threw her out at home for the third out of the inning.
The Rambelles added a run in the bottom of the third. Madison Greenwell singled up the middle and stole second. Tina Cisneros hit a ground-rule double to score Greenwell to extend the lead to 2-0.
Marlett had a no-hitter going through the sixth inning until a double by Savannah Stech broke it up. The double brought in Tarleton State's only run in the top of the sixth inning. The freshman moved to 13-2 on the season and it is the 11th time that Marlett has held a team to under three hits this season.
The Rambelles jumped out to a quick advantage with three runs in the first inning. Kenedy Urbany hit a RBI double to right field and Camry Weinheimer scored two with a single to right field. Ambra Hill scored the fourth run of the game in the bottom of the second. The junior hit her second triple of the season and scored on a single by Greenwell. Greenwell finished the game going 4-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
Urbany started game two and held Tarleton State hitless until the fourth. The TexAnns were able to get on the board in the fifth as Nyka Wood and Mikayla Stogsdill each scored to cut the lead to 4-2. The sophomore pitched six innings giving up two runs on five hits. Marlett came on in the seventh after Menchaca hit a double to lead off the inning. Marlett ended the threat for her second save of the season. Urbany moved to 11-5 on the season.
Angelo State returns to action next Friday in Wichita Falls for a LSC four-game series with Midwestern State.
