SAN ANGELO – The No. 11 Angelo State volleyball team will host its annual "Dig Pink" match on Friday, October 14 against Western New Mexico at 7 p.m. followed by a matchup with Eastern New Mexico the following day at 2 p.m.
The Belles moved to 16-2, 7-1 LSC with a pair of sweeps this past week against Midwestern State and Cameron. The team currently shares the top spot in the conference standings with Tarleton State. The Belles offense leads the Lone Star Conference with a .269 hitting average and dishing out a conference high 14.44 kills per set thus far. ASU's defense also leads the LSC averaging 17.79 digs per set and has held its opponents to a conference low .142 clip. Â
During Friday's match the Belles will be dawning a new version of its annual "Dig Pink" jerseys to help bring awareness to breast cancer. The jerseys will be auctioned off and the proceeds will be donated to the Sideout Foundation for breast cancer research. Â In volleyball, the term "side-out" refers to a team regaining control of the ball. This is the aim of the Side-Out Foundation, to help breast cancer patients regain control of their lives. The foundation accomplishes this goal by utilizing the power and teamwork of the volleyball community to support "game-changing" breast cancer research. This allows patients an increase in quality time with their families until a cure is found. In 2015, the Belles surpassed its goal of raising over $3500. This ranked as the second highest amount that the Belles have raised for the cause.
New to the LSC, Western New Mexico is currently riding a three game sweep streak and are sitting at 13-6, 5-3 LSC on the season. The Mustangs are second in the conference with a .246 hitting percentage and lead from the service line with an average of 1.82 aces per set. It has also checks in as the least blocked team in the conference. Â ASU leads the all-time series 4-3, with the last match up between the two resulting in a 3-2 win for the Belles in 2015.
Eastern New Mexico, which it shares third place in the conference with WNMU and Texas A&M – Kingsville, boasts a 10-8 overall record and is currently 5-3 in the LSC. ENMU is currently third in the LSC averaging 13.45 kills per set. The Belles swept the Greyhounds in both match ups during the 2015. ASU leads the all –time series between the two, 45-19. Â
Leading the ASU offense will be the trio of Mallory Blauser, Abbie Lynn and Brianna Sotello. Blauser led the squad with 24 total kills for an average of 4.00 kills per set and a .423 clip in last weeks matches. The senior is second in the conference with an average of 4.38 kills per set. Lynn followed with a total of 20 kills and only a single error for the week. She is second on the team with a .308 hitting percentage thus far this year. Â Rounding out the group, Sotello turned in a team third 17 kills for the week while being second on the team with 21 digs on defense this past week. She is second on the team dropping in 3.30 kills per set and leads the defense with 212 digs on the year.
Heading the Belles on the defensive side of the ball will be Mallory Davidson, Morgan Seaton and Leiyona Young. Davidson led Angelo State with 25 digs for the week, which averaged her 4.17 per set. She has climbed in to fourth on the squad with 159 digs on the season. Â Seaton, who leads the team with 49.0 total blocks on the year, led the team along the net with nine total blocks last week. She is just as potent on offense as she is fourth on the Belles with 1.87 kills per set. Finally, Young has chalked up a team second 36.0 blocks for the year. She leads the team along the net averaging 0.97 blocks per set. Â
Dishing out the rock for ASU will be setter Meghan Parker. The San Antonio native remains within the top 10 in the nation averaging 11.79 assist per set. Her 70 total assists during last week's matches gave the freshman a total of 719, which places her within 200 assists of breaking into the ASU record books. She has also turned in top number on the defensive side of the ball recording an average of 2.30 digs per set.
Finally, adding depth to the Belles line up will be Tulani Titley, Micheala Sifuentes and Brooke Robertson. Titley completed last week's slate with the second most blocks on the squad and currently fourth on the team with a total of32. Defensive specialist Sifuentes leads the team with 3.52 digs per set and is third with a total of 169 digs on the season. Also strengthening the ASU line of defense is Robertson, who is averaging 2.35 digs per set.
