CANYON, Texas – The Angelo State softball team scored a season high 13 runs off 14 hits to beat Fort Lewis in a five inning run-rule game on the final day of the WT Invitational in Canyon.
The Rambelles improve to 8-3 on the year as eight different players recorded a hit. It is the second consecutive game ASU has scored at least 10 runs and the third time this season. After going without a home run in the first nine games, the Rambelles have hit four in the last two games.
"It was a good way to end the tournament with a run-rule victory," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "Kenedy Urbany was great in the circle and Becky Wilehlm and Taegan Kirk both hit bombs on some deep fences. It was exciting to see two freshmen step up and swing it. It was really good to see us hit the ball the way we did the last two days. The team is excited and feels good about things despite losing a few games. We are ready for four more games this week."
The fifth inning was a big inning for the Rambelles with seven runs on four hits. Lanie Robinson started the inning off with a double to right field to plate Kelly Johnson. Ambra Hill singled up the middle to score pinch runner Katlyn Herzog and put ASU up 7-1. Bailey Wallace drove in Hill and a walk by Riley Adams would load the bases for Taegan Kirk. The freshman cleared the bases with her first career grand slam to left field to push the ASU lead to 13-1. It was Kirk's only hit of the game. The Lubbock native drove in five RBIs and now has driven in 10 RBIs in the last two games.
Fort Lewis scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth but get no closer at 13-2.
Kenedy Urbany earned the win pitching 4.0 innings and only allowed four hits. The junior struck out five batters and have up a single run.
For the second straight game, ASU jumped out to a lead in the first inning. The first four batters all reached base as Madison Greenwell, Wallace and Evans all scored for a 3-0 lead after one inning. Wallace was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI at the plate and Evans also had a good day at the dish going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
