GOLDEN, Colorado – The Angelo State baseball team took game one of its four game series with a commanding, 14-4, win over the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado on Friday afternoon.
The Rams improved its record to 7-3 with the win. Starting pitcher Bryce Zak added his third win of the season to his record, and is now tied for first in the Lone Star Conference with a 3-0 record on the season. Five Rams recorded multiple hits on the night and the team capped of the day with a stellar .442 team batting average. With the loss the Colorado School of Mines Ordiggers fall to 4-5 on the year.
"It was a great win today and we played well at altitude," said ASU head coach Kevin Brooks. "Our seven, eight and nine hitters were awesome! We have needed to get production out of them and today they did a fantastic job."
With a man on first and third, Outfielder Elias Aguirre (2-for-4) got the scoring started for ASU in the top of the second inning as he beat out a bunt down the third base line that scored Jarryd Klemm (1-for-5). David Goggin (3-for-5) then stroked a single through the left side to bring in Tyler Coolbaugh (4-for-5). The Rams closed out the second inning with a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the third, senior Paxton DeLaGarza cranked a solo shot off of a 2-2 count, which cleared left field wall. With the score now 3-0 in the top of the fourth and the bases loaded, Oredigger pitcher Tyler Thomas's wild pitch would plate another run for the Rams. This was followed up with a throwing error by the CSM third baseman that allowed both Goggin and Aguirre to cross. DeLaGarza would complete the inning tacking on another run as he plated Christian Abilla (5-for-1) with a ground out to the left side to make the game 7-0.
ASU would not see another run score until Goggin rocketed a homer to left center that would add another two to the board. The team then added another four runs at the top of the seventh with singles by Abilla, Nathan Ruane (1-for-1) and DeLaGarza to give the Rams a 13-0 lead.
The Orediggers added four of their own in the bottom of the seventh, but Coolbaugh fielded a grounder at third and threw across the diamond to end the threat. In the eighth and final inning, Angelo State center fielder, Aguirre, grounded into a fielder's choice that would score the final run for the team.
Zak tossed six complete innings for the Rams. The games starter recorded eight strikeouts and gave up no runs off of three hits. Five pitchers, which included Alex McCune, Bryson Mitchell, Jhonatan Del Rosario, Dustin Angiel and Joe Hauser, entered the game in relief for ASU. The group combined giving up four runs off of three hits and striking out two.
