No.16 Belles Dig Pink Match Ends With Sweep of MSU

SAN ANGELO – The No. 16 Angelo State volleyball team notched its 11th sweep of the season over Midwestern State (25-19, 25-19, 25-16) as it brought awareness to breast cancer with its annual "Dig Pink" match.

The Belles improved to 12-4 overall and 4-3 in Lone Star Conference play with Friday night's victory. The ASU defense limited the Mustangs to a .053 clip for the match. While the offense marked a .241 team hitting percentage for the night, it was led by Brianna Sotello who recorded her team most seventh double-double. The senior fired in a team leading 14 kills and headed the defense with 16 digs. With the loss, MSU fell to 8-8, 3-5 on the season.

''To host an event that means a lot to people and get a win on top of that really ices the cake, " said ASU Head Volleyball Coach Chuck Waddington. "I really challenged them in the locker room between sets two and three. We were winning in the first two sets but we weren't playing very clean and they responded to that pretty well. We need to come out tomorrow against Cameron with our set three mentality from tonight."

The Belles got off to a quick start in the first set with a Sotello kill followed by a big block from Anna Graham and Morgan Seaton. This was the first of a team-leading three total blocks on the night for the duo. MSU bounced back with three points of its own and the set was tied at three. The two squads exchanged points until, tied at six, Bailey Drum came through with a kill to place Angelo State back out in front for the final time. The Belles would maintain the lead with some big swings from Tulani Titley, Meghan Parker, Drum, Seaton and Sotello. Parker marked a season high in assists with her team leading 33. Sotello would secure the set one win for the Belles with an ace.

Changing sides for the second set, ASU once again opened with a pair of Parker aces and a Sotello kill. The Mustangs would be unable to rebound from the early lead. MSU would pull to within two of the Belles with 20-18 on the board. However, Parker would set up Sotello for a timely kill that stifled the Mustangs advance and sent Angelo State on a 5-1 run to take the 2-0 lead heading into the break. Seaton would contribute two consecutive kills to the run as she finished the evening with a team third seven total.

Midwestern State came out firing to open the final set, as the Mustangs took a 2-1 lead. ASU responded placing five straight on the board. The run included monster kills from Ali Davison and Graham. This was one of a season high five for Davison and one of a team second eight total for Graham. After MSU added a pair of points to its total, ASU rattled off another lengthy 7-2 run to give the Belles a 14-6 advantage. The Belles would continue to increase its lead. With the score sitting at 24-16, Micheala Sifuentes, who was role player on the Belles defense with a team second 15 digs, dropped in the final kill to secure the sweep.

The Belles return to action tomorrow, October 7 in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center to face Cameron at 2 p.m. The Aggies will enter the match at 5-11, 2-6 LSC, and will be seeking to bounce back after falling in Stephenville to Tarleton State in three sets.
