No. 23 Angelo State Comes Away From Cameron Victorious

LAWTON, Oklahoma – The No. 23 Angelo State volleyball team emerged victorious as it downed Cameron (23-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-23) on Friday night.

Recording its third straight win, ASU improved to 19-8, 10-7 LSC on the season. Brianna Sotello (23), Haley Coulter (10) and Morgan Seaton (10), all recorded double-figure kills for the Belles attack. While, the ASU defense was headed by Bailey Mulder (20), Sotello (19) and Coulter (18) who all checked in with double-digits in the dig department. This allowed both Sotello and Coulter to mark double-doubles on the night. Sotello continues to lead the team with 14 on the season and this marked Coulter's third consecutive match marking a double-double. Meghan Parker rounded out the top performers as she tallied 50 assists on the night, her second highest total of the season.  With Friday's loss, The Aggies fall 7-19 overall on the season and 3-14 in the conference.

"It's no secret that we have struggled on the road this season and that's why tonight's win was so important for us," commented ASU Head Volleyball Coach Chuck Waddington. "We showed some great composure in some very tense situations to secure this win. I'm proud of the team for having the grit to get it done."

Angelo State opened up the match with consecutive kills from Sotello and Seaton to take the early 2-0 lead. CU would respond with five straight of its own overtaking the lead, 5-2. However, a Sotello kill got the Belles back on track and the team would add six more points to the board. This included a solo block by Anna Graham, as well as a block by Sundara Chinn and Parker. Graham would continue on to lead the Belles with six total blocks on the night.

Down 14-11, Angelo State placed four points on the board to take the brief lead. This was capped by the first of a team leading three aces by Parker. Unfortunately, ASU would be unable to maintain the lead in the set as the Aggies worked towards a 24-20 lead. A pair of kills from Coulter and Graham followed by a Sotello, Graham block brought ASU back to within one at 24-23, but CU dropped in the final kill to take the 1-0 set lead.

Seeking to recover from the first set, the Belles opened the second set with a 6-0 onslaught that saw kills from Sotello and Chinn along with a solo block from Seaton. The senior leader finished the night with a team second 4 total blocks to surpass 300 during her ASU career. Cameron would be unable to recover from the initial blow as the Belles would maintain the lead throughout the remainder of the set.  An Aggie service error would bring the match score to 1-1 heading into the break.

Coming out of the intermission, Cameron would open the third set taking a 7-4 lead. A massive 12-1 run by the Belles would place the team back into the driver's seat. The run saw major swings from Seaton, Sotello and Graham, as well as aces from Mulder and Coulter. The Aggies attempted a rally closing the gap to three points at 17-14, but ASU stifled the run with another Seaton kill. A Sotello kill immediately followed by Mulder's second ace of the night closed out the set and gave the Belles the 2-1 set lead.

The Aggies did not go down easily, as CU struck early and held on to the lead for the majority of the final set. Trailing 20-19, a timely Sotello, Seaton block brought the match back to an even 20. Parker then drove in her final ace of the night to allow Angelo State to take its first lead since placing the initial set point on the board. After a Seaton kill and a ball handling error by the Aggies, Graham and Coulter fired in back-to-back kills to secure the team's win.

The Belles continue its travel with a stop at Midwestern State on Saturday, November 5. First server for this match is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.
