SAN ANGELO – The No. 1 Angelo State softball team had a record day with a 5-1 and 9-1 sweep of St. Edward's by winning the most games in a regular season in program history and Brandy Marlett setting the single-season strikeout record on Wednesday at Mayer Field.
The Rambelles (46-4) surpassed the 2007 record of 44 with the pair of victories. ASU belted four home runs in the doubleheader and scored 14 runs. St. Edward's (18-28) was held to just two runs in 12 innings. Angelo State has racked up double-digit hits in two of the last three games and for the 12th time this season.
"I was proud of the way we came out and played with a purpose today," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "We have a lot to play for and we came out and played really well. Both pitchers threw the ball extremely well and we hit balls hard. The wind kind of cost us a couple of home runs but hitting four was encouraging. We are going to need to continue this with a good Texas A&M-Commerce team coming in this weekend."
Marlett set the tone early being only six strikeouts away from rewriting the record book. The junior struck out two in the first and second innings going into the third. With a 1-0 lead going into the fourth, the Henderson, Nevada native gave up a pair of singles before settling down. Marlett struck out SEU's leadoff batter to tie Claudia Lopez and set the record to end the third inning with her 222nd in a single season. She finished the game with eight strikeouts and now has 224.
Courtney Barnhill started the scoring in the second with a solo home run to right center.
Madison Greenwell scored on an error by the St. Edward's shortstop to make it 2-0 in the third. Two more runs came across in the fourth. Kenedy Urbany hit a two RBI double to left center for a 4-0 advantage and Alexis
Evans capped off the scoring with a towering home run off the scoreboard in the fifth. It is the senior's sixth of the season.
Marlett improved to 23-3 on the year. She gave up one run on seven hits to go along with the eight strikeouts.
Urbany got the crowd going in the first inning of game two with two runners on and no outs. The senior belted the ball over the right center fence for her 10th home run of the year. She moved into second place on the ASU career list and is only two away from tying the career leader Kacie Easley.
Morgan Hill got the start and limited St. Edward's to two hits and one run. The only run was in the second inning with a solo home run.
Behind Hill's pitching the Rambelle offense continued to provide support. Amanda Ramage started the scoring in the third with a RBI single to left field. Danae Bina brought her home with a single up the middle and a RBI double from Brooke Mangold made it 6-0.
Barnhill hit her second home run of the day and her 12th of the year in the fourth. Barnhill recorded another RBI with a single in the fifth and Katlyn Herzog ended the game by run-rule on a fielder's choice to make it 9-1.
The Rambelles will host Texas A&M-Commerce this Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23 for the final regular season home games of the year.
