LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 1 Angelo State University baseball team held off the Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals in the series opener on Friday with a 7-6 victory to remain undefeated on the season.
In Case You Missed It:
- Both teams got off to a slow start until Josh Elvir ended the scoreless streak with a three-run homer over the left field wall to put the Rams on the board first, 3-0.
- In the fourth inning, the Chaparrals' Larry Leitha hit a one out triple to put LCU in scoring position. Luis Navarro followed behind with a single up the middle to score Leitha and close in on the Rams lead, 3-1. With two outs, Merrit McPherson doubled to score Jaxon Shirley and Navarro to tie the game at 3-3. LCU ended the inning off a single to left field to take the 4-3 lead over the Rams.
- The Blue and Gold answered back in the fifth with Parker Bramlett hitting a lead off single up the middle to start things off for ASU. With one out, Bradley Mathiowetz hit a double to center field to place Bramlett at third for the tie. Aaron Walters stepped up to the plate and knocked a single to center field to allow Bramlett and Mathiowetz to score to give the lead back to ASU, 5-4. Nicholas Seginowich tallied the last two runs of the inning with a two-run bomb to left field to increase the lead to 7-4.
- From there, LCU held the Rams to four scoreless innings as they tried to regain the lead, scoring two more runs between the fifth and the seventh innings but fell short as ASU claimed the 7-6 victory.

"Proud of the way we battled and found a way to win.
Carson Childers was outstanding out of the pen and really closed the door. Offensively, we were able to get a couple of big swings from Josh and Seginowich that proved to be the difference."
Key Players:
- Bramlett finished the day 3-for-4 from the plate, scoring two runs for the Rams.
- Elvir went 1-for-4, tallying a three-run homer and plated one run for the ASU offense.
- On the mound, Trent Baker notched his fourth win of the season, striking out 10 batters and walked two.
- Carson Childers relieved Baker and tallied four strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work to record his first save of the season.
