MELBOURNE, Florida – The Angelo State Rambelle softball team competed in the Florida Tech Invitational as they faced off against the University of Alabama-Huntsville and Molloy College on the first day. The Rambelles lost to Alabama-Huntsville 6-8, and defeated Molloy College, 2-0.
Against Alabama-Huntsville:
- A big hit from Courtney Barnhill scored Megan Gordon and Keilei Garcia at the top of the second inning, as the Rambelles took a 2-0 lead over the Chargers.
- Madison Fernandez hit a single, advancing Avery Zeigler to third base and registering an RBI as Barnhill took the opportunity to score for Angelo State, increasing the Rambelles lead to 3-0.
- At the top of the 4th inning, Zeigler was hit by a pitch. Maleya Burns stepped up to the plate and smacked another home run out of the park, scoring two more runs for the Rambelles and cutting the Chargers lead to one, 5-6.
- Fernandez walked and Logan Graham stepped into pinch run. Karina Rocha was walked with Graham advancing to second. Garcia singled to deep center field, advancing Rocha to second and scoring Graham to tie the game at 6-6.
- With the bases loaded for Angelo State, Rocha was thrown out heading home to score, keeping the score at 6-6.
- At the bottom of the 5th, Genesis Armendariz would go 3-3 to give the Rambelles another chance at bat.
- At the top of the 6th, Rocha was walked to first with Hatty Shope pinch running for Rocha. Armendariz would ground out to second and advance Shope to second. Garcia would fly out to center field for the third out.
- Even though Jade Strother was advanced to third at the top of the 7th inning, Angelo State fell short against the Chargers, 6-8.
Key Players
Against Molloy College:
- Meagan Hill started the first inning off well for the Rambelles as Hill had three strikeouts right out of the gate in the first inning.
- Avery Zeigler was walked to first, with Maleya Burns reaching first on a fielding error in center field, with Zeigler advancing to second.
- A grounder to the pitcher from Karina Rocha advanced Zeigler to third and Burns to second, but ended the first inning in the process.
- The Rambelles defense kept the Lions to just three at-bats at the top of the second inning, giving the Rambelles another chance to get the offense in action.
- At the bottom of the 4th inning, Burns was walked to first and stole second. Madison Fernandez hit a single into right field, advancing Burns to third. Logan Graham would pinch run for Fernandez and steal second for Angelo State.
- Keilei Garcia singled along the third base line, advancing Graham to third and scoring Burns for an RBI.
- Paxton Scheurer hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Garcia to second and score Graham. The Rambelles jumped to a 2-0 lead over Molloy College quickly in the bottom of the 4th inning.
- Neither the Rambelles nor the Lions scored in the 5th or 6th innings, both teams' defenses keeping the other team from scoring.
- Meagan Hills superb pitching skills and the Rambelles defense kept the Lions from scoring as Angelo State claims their first victory in the Florida Tech Invite, 2-0.
