Rambelles Defeat Texas A&M International 5-4, Advances to LSC Final Game

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK. – The No. 20 Angelo State Rambelles softball team defeated the Texas A&M International Dustdevils in the semifinal game of the Lone Star Conference Tournament, 5-4, to advance to the final game of the LSC tournament!

Corbin started in the circle for the Rambelles as she would go three up and three out in the top of the first inning, striking one batter out swinging while the other two grounded out to second and third basemen to bring ASU to the batters box.

Corbin was crucial in the top of the second inning as the first batter hit a foul ball out to the left fielder. One Dustdevil was hit by a pitch and walked, while another Dustdevil hit a single out to deep right field. The Rambelles defense pulled off a double play to end the second inning as the runner was thrown out at second off a fly ball out to the left field.

With two outs and Keilei Garcia on first for the Rambelles, Jade Strother smashed a double out into deep left field, registering an RBI as Garcia rounded the bases to score a run to give ASU an early 1-0 lead over Texas A&M International. Hatty Shope stepped into the batters box for ASU, also smashing a double into deep right field and advancing to third on the throw, registering an RBI as Strother crossed home plate to bring ASU to a 2-0 lead over the Dustdevils. A wild pitch would bring Shope home to extend the Rambelles lead to 3-0 over TAMIU.

With bases loaded, Corbin showed her pitching skills as she struck the next two batters out, one looking and one swinging. The Dustdevils managed to score one run off of a single out to deep right field, but a third strikeout from Corbin ended the top of the third inning as TAMIU cut the Rambelles lead to two, 3-1.

The Dustdevils managed to tie the game up in the top of the fourth inning, 3-3, but the Rambelles defense rallied behind Corbin as the first out came from a fly ball out to the left fielder. Genesis Armendariz came in to pitch relief for Corbin and the Rambelle defense managed to quickly grab two outs to give the Rambelles another chance on offense as two batters grounded out to the second baseman and the shortstop.

With one out registered in the bottom of the fifth inning, Shope smacked a single past the second baseman, stealing second shortly afterwards. Ashlyn Lerma walked, advancing to second as Ashlynn Box made it to first on a fielders choice as Shope crossed home plate to score a run for the Rambelles, 4-1.

Armendariz went three up and three out in the top of the sixth inning as one batter flied out to the right fielder while the final two outs of the inning came from grounders to the shortstop and the third baseman to bring Madison Fernandez up to bat for Angelo State in the bottom of the sixth.

Fernandez stepped into the batters box for the Blue and Gold, smashing a ball over the right field fence for a solo home run to bring ASU to a 5-3 lead over the Dustdevils. Mykayla Stroud and Strother both walked with one out registered, but Shope struck out swinging while Haylie Mitchell lined out to the shortstop to end the Rambelles offensive push in the bottom of the sixth.

One Dustdevil was walked but was thrown out at second on a fielders choice. Heather Ruiz hit an unassisted grounder to the first baseman, advancing the runner on first to second with two outs registered. The runner on second scored a run for the Dustdevils off of a single hit into deep right field to bring the Dustdevils within one run from taking the lead from ASU, but the Rambelles defense proved too strong for Texas A&M International as the final out of the game came off of an unassisted ground ball to the first baseman.
