#18 Rambelles Ride Hot Bats to Pair of Victories

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team opened their home schedule today in emphatic fashion, scoring 29 times in their first two games of the George and Ola McCorkle Challenge to claim wins over Bethany College and East Central.

Ashlyn Lerma led the Rambelles off in game one with a walk before stealing second, one of three bags she swiped in the game, to set up Paxton Scheurer, who singled in her teammate for the games' first run.

Scheurer would score on a groundout later in the inning; Bailey Martinez drove in a pair of runs with a two-out, ground-rule double to the right-centerfield gap.

With a 4-0 lead after one inning, Haylie Mitchell would lead off the second inning with a bunt single before stealing second. With two outs, Scheurer would double to right center to score her teammate and make the lead 5-0.

Designated player Keilei Garcia led off the next inning with a double; pinch runner Ashleigh Boswell would score on an Ashlynn Box triple.

After a pitching change, Box would score on a Martinez double and make the lead 7-0.

The Swedes of Bethany College would plate five runs in the top of the fourth inning, drawing four walks and being hit by two pitches; all in all, they would score their five runs while only recording one hit.

Scheurer would pop out to second, scoring Lerma on a sacrifice fly to make it 8-5 after four innings.

Lerma would single, steal and eventually score on a Madison Fernandez sacrifice fly in the sixth inning; the Rambelles would plate their 10th and final run of the game on a Swede error.

Starter Genesis Armendariz pitched 3.1 innings, allowing six walks and three hits, as well as five runs (all earned) and three hit batters. Ashton McMillan relieved Armendariz, throwing the final 3.2 innings to pick up her first collegiate win. The freshman pitched only allowed a single hit.

Lerma would lead game two off with an infield single; back-to-back triples by Lindsey Evans and Scheurer preceded a Fernandez double to give the hosts a 3-0 lead; Box and Martinez would record consecutive doubles to score one and two runs, respectively, for a 6-0 lead.

A double steal by Mitchell and Mykayla Stroud would see Stroud cross the plate; Evans, batting for the second time in the inning, would single to center to drive in the eighth and final run of the first inning.

Three walks and a single would see the Rambelles tack on another run in the second inning, before scoring three runs in the third through a wild pitch and Box's second home run of the season, a two-run shot to center field.
With a 12-0 lead in the fourth inning, the Rambelles would tack on six more runs in their final turn at the plate.

Ashton Dirner singled before scoring on a Scheurer single; Scheurer would score on an error by the Tiger center fielder.

Katie Burris would get plunked with the bases loaded to drive in a run; Stroud finished the scoring by clearing the bases with a triple to left center.

Torrey Hogan picked up her fourth win of the season, only allowing three hits and striking out five Tigers in 3.2 innings of work. Sierra Schottler would record the final four outs in relief.

The Rambelles improve to 7-1 on the season; they face the Swedes and Tigers again tomorrow in day two of the George and Ola McCorkle Challenge.
