#9 Rambelles Tally Pair of Wins at ASU Invitational

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team continued their winning ways with a pair of victories to open the Angelo State Invitational presented by Bahlman Cleaners, coming back to walk off Texas A&M International before quickly taking care of business in game two, run-ruling New Mexico Highlands in five innings.

The Dustdevils started game one off with an RBI double in the first inning to take an early lead; they would double their lead in the fourth with a sacrifice fly.

The Rambelles' highpowered offense was stifled by Dustdevils starter Darrian Smith, who held the Rambelles hitless until Madison Fernandez got the Rambelles on the board with a solo home run to center field to end the perfect game and the shutout with a single swing of the bat.

Ashyln Lerma's two-out single in the sixth preceded Lindsey Evans' RBI double to tie the game; the center fielder was thrown out to end the inning trying to extend her double to a triple.

Ashlynn Box would single and Fernandez would walk to give the Rambelles two baserunners for the first time in the whole game in the bottom of the seventh.

Keilei Garcia would hit a ball that was misfielded by the Dustdevils first baseman and allowed pinch runner Ashton Dirner to score the winning run.

Genesis Armendariz, who faced the final two batters of the top of the seventh inning, picked up the win in relief. Starter Torrey Hogan threw 6.2 innings, allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out four.

The Rambelles' offense came out of the gate quicker in game two against New Mexico Highlands.

In the first inning, Box would hit her third home run of the season, a three-run shot over the right field fence to give the hosts an early lead.

Paxton Scheurer would single in the third inning and subsequently score on a Box RBI double. Since starting the season 0-6 from the plate, the Rambelles' right fielder holds an eight-game hitting streak.

Box would score herself on a RBI single from the bat of Garcia; Bailey Martinez would follow that up with a two-RBI double to make it 7-0; and pinch hitting with the bases loaded, Maleya Burns cleared the bases with a double to the left centerfield gap to take the score to the final, 10-0.

Armendariz would start the second game, pitching 3.1 innings and only allowing three hits while striking out two en route to her fifth win of the season. Sierra Schottler would throw the final 1.2 innings in relief, recording her first two collegiate strikeouts in the combined shutout.

The Rambelles are now 12-1 on the season. They will face off against the Dustdevils and Cowgirls again tomorrow in day two of the Angelo State Invitational presented by Bahlman Cleaners.
