SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team, coming off a pair of wins over the weekend over Eastern New Mexico, upped their game against the nation's sixth-ranked team, West Texas A&M, defeating the Lady Buffs in a run-rule victory in game one of their doubleheader before the Lady Buffs would take game two from the Rambelles.
The Rambelles jumped out to a lead in the first inning through a solo home run by
Lindsey Evans and a two-run home run for
Keilei Garcia to make it 3-0.
A walk, a single and a fielding error to start the second inning loaded the bases for the Rambelles, setting up
Ashlynn Box to drive in a pair of runs with a single through the right side.
The Lady Buffs would score a pair of runs in the fourth inning through a lead-off home run and a Rambelle error to make it 5-2 in favor of the hosts.
The Rambelles would score the final five runs in the sixth inning to force a run-rule victory over the Lady Buffs.
An
Ashlyn Lerma single and
Paxton Scheurer fielder's choice preceded a Box home run to left field, her fourth of the season.
Two batter later,
Madison Fernandez hit her fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to left center.
Bailey Martinez followed with a single before scoring on a
Mykayla Stroud single, scoring on a fielding error by the Lady Buffs left fielder.
Genesis Armendariz picked up the win in her seventh complete-game effort of the season. The New Mexican only allowed six hits and one earned run while striking out seven in six innings of work. Armendariz improves to 10-3 overall on the season.
Game two was a different story for both squads. Six extra-base hits led to all ten of the Lady Buffs runs in game two, including a pair of two-run home runs from conference preseason player of the year Ruby Salzman.
Scheurer would deliver a pair of RBI singles as she went 3-3 from the plate in game two; Lerma would record a pair of hits in two at-bats, also drawing a pair of walks. Between the two games, Lerma was perfect in five steal opportunities and is now 23-23 on stolen base attempts this season.
Fernandez would hit a two-run home run for her fifth home run of the season, and Box and Garcia would deliver RBIs through a single and a sacrifice fly, respectively.
The Rambelles are now 19-5 overall on the season and 4-4 in conference play. They return to action this weekend on the road against UTPB and Western New Mexico.
