Odessa, Texas – The Angelo State softball team claimed a pair of victories on the road against UT Permian Basin on Friday, riding their offense in game one before relying on pitching and defense, as well as timely hitting in game two.
The Rambelles started the scoring in the first inning, with
Ashlynn Box delivering an RBI double on a full count for the game's first run.
A couple of Rambelle errors and some timely hitting gave the Falcons a pair of runs, and the lead, after one full inning of play.
Paxton Scheurer led off the third inning with a solo home run on the first pitch to tie the game;
Madison Fernandez would homer to center field to score a pair of runs to bring the score to 4-2 for the Rambelles.
Ashlyn Lerma and
Lindsey Evans would lead off the fourth inning with a single and a walk, respectively, to set up Schuerer, who delivered her second home run in as many innings to extend the Rambelles lead; the Rambelles would tack on an additional run later in the inning off a fielder's choice to make it 8-2.
Lerma and Evans led off the fifth inning with a walk and a single, with Lerma scoring on Evans' infield single. Scheurer promptly stepped up and left the yard for the third time in as many innings, this one scoring two runs. In her three at-bats in which she homered, Scheurer only saw a total of five pitches.
The Falcons would score five runs in the bottom of the fifth to stave off the run-rule and scored again in the sixth to bring the game to its final score of 11-8.
Lerma and Scheurer recorded three hits each in game one while Evans and Box tallying a pair of hits each; the Rambelles stole nine bases in game one, led by Lerma, who swiped four bags.
Genesis Armendariz picked up her 11
th win of the season, allowing five hits and one earned run in four innings of work, striking out five. Scheurer threw one inning in relief while
Ashton McMillan threw the final two innings in relief, striking out four Falcons.
The Falcons started the scoring in game two, pushing runs across courtesy of a sacrifice fly and an RBI single in the first inning.
The Rambelles pulled a run back in the third inning, scoring on a Falcon error, before Scheurer homered to lead off the fifth inning to tie the game.
With the game tied in the top of the seventh and with two runners in scoring position, Fernandez doubled to the left centerfield gap to score the decisive runs for the Rambelles.
Lerma, Scheurer, Fernandez and
Bailey Martinez each notched two hits in game two and the Rambelles stole six bases through six different players; in the two games, the Rambelles were 15-16 in stolen base attempts.
After a rocky first inning, starter
Torrey Hogan settled into a groove in the circle, only allowing five hits and two runs in a complete-game effort, striking out five for her eighth win of the season. After the opening frame, the Lubbock native only allowed two singles over her final six innings of work.
The Rambelles improve to 21-5 overall on the season and 6-4 in conference play. They are back in action on Sunday against Western New Mexico, who are coming off a pair of losses to Lubbock Christian this afternoon.
