SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team is on the road for doubleheaders against Midwestern State and Texas Woman's this weekend. They split their doubleheaders with #1 UT Tyler and #21 Texas A&M-Commerce this past weekend at home.
The Rambelles are ranked 14
th in the country and have a 25-7 overall record on the season and a 10-6 record in conference play. They are currently seventh in the Lone Star Conference standings, just two games back of a four-way tie for third place.
The Rambelles' win this past weekend included a 3-2 walk-off victory on Friday against UT Tyler before run-ruling the Lions 13-2 in five innings. The run-rule win was their ninth this season and their second against a ranked opponent.
This weekend is the first four of nine games over a three-week stretch in which the Rambelles are away from the friendly confines of Mayer Stadium, their longest time this season on the road.
The Rambelle offense is ranked in the top ten nationally in home runs (2
nd – 48) and walks (3
rd – 132). For the season, the Rambelle lineup is hitting .325 as a team, and slugging .561.
Ashlyn Lerma is the current LSC Hitter of the Week for hitting .500 this past weekend. She stole three bases, drove in three runs, and scored five runs. Against Commerce in game one, she hit her second inside-the-park home run.
On the season, the Rambelles' second baseman has a .352 batting average and has drawn 24 while only striking out nine times, good enough for a .496 on-base percentage. She is perfect in 32 steal attempts this season, having also scored a team-high 37 runs.
She is perfect in her last 35 steal attempts, last being thrown out on the base paths on April 18
th of last year against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Defensively, the 2021 LSC Gold Glover has only committed a single error for a .990 fielding percentage, the best on the team.
Teammate
Paxton Scheurer continues her fine form at the plate, hitting .436 on the season and still leading the country with 17 home runs this season, tied for fifth-most in the program's history. Her 53 RBIs also leads all of Division II, and she is third in the country with a 1.030 slugging percentage.
Madison Fernandez has eight home runs this season, while teammates
Ashlynn Box and
Lindsey Evans both have seven on the year.
In the circle, the Rambelles have a 2.92 team ERA.
Genesis Armendariz is 14-3 with 93 strikeouts in 92.1 innings, while
Torrey Hogan has a 3.47 ERA and a 9-4 record in 17 starts this season. This season,
Sierra Schottler has made ten relief appearances, owning a 2.44 ERA and not allowing an earned run in two innings of work against UT Tyler and Texas A&M-Commerce.
SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
Midwestern State is 6-25 overall and 5-11 in conference play. This season, they have wins over UTPB, Western New Mexico, St. Edward's, and Cameron most recently.
Their lineup is hitting .249 as a team and is eighth in the LSC with 26 home runs. Ashley Turner and Bailey Brenek are hitting .376 and .368, respectively, while Hanna Hetherington has ten home runs.
Their pitching staff has a 6.46 team ERA, and opponents are hitting .328 against the Mustangs.
Travis Scott is 39-18 against the Mustangs, having won their past 11 meetings, dating back to 2016; the Rambelles have not lost in Wichita Falls since 2015.
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Texas Woman's is 9-18 overall on the season and 4-12 in conference play.
The Pioneers are hitting .244 as a team and have only hit nine home runs. They are seventh in the league with 56 stolen bases this season.
Their pitching staff has a 4.85 ERA and an opponent batting average of .334. This season, Jules Malis and Kelsie Briggs have four wins in the circle.
Scott is 52-17 against the Pioneers as head coach of the Rambelles, winning both games last season. This will be the Rambelles' first trip to Denton since 2018 when they took two out of three from the Pioneers.
After this weekend, the Rambelles stay on the road for matchups against Texas A&M International and Texas A&M-Kingsville next weekend.
