SAN ANGELO – Coming off a 38-9 regular season and a 22-8 record in conference play, the Angelo State softball team turns their attention to the postseason, starting with the Lone Star Conference tournament in Tyler, Texas, hosted by LSC regular-season champions UT Tyler.
The Rambelles start their weekend with a quarterfinal matchup against four-seed Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday, with the first pitch scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
Both teams are nationally ranked and finished tied in the LSC standings; the Rambelles were fifth in the last regional rankings while the Lions were sixth.
When these two teams met earlier in the season, the Rambelles took game one with a 13-2, five-inning run-rule victory before the Lions took game two in a pitcher's duel, 2-1.
The 13-2 victory saw leadoff hitter
Ashlyn Lerma go 4-for-4 from the plate with four runs scored and an inside-the-park home run, with the second baseman later named the LSC Hitter of the Week for the performance.
Ashlynn Box and
Maleya Burns went 2-for-3 from the plate while starting pitcher
Genesis Armendariz struck out eight in four innings in the win.
The Rambelles have won a conference-most seven LSC tournament titles, last doing so in 2018; they made the tournament finals a season ago.
These two teams last met in the LSC Tournament in 2019, where the Lions defeated the Rambelles 2-0 en route to making their only tournament finals appearance. Lions' pitcher Emily Otto picked up the win on that occasion, only allowing two hits and four walks while striking out nine.
The winner of this game will face the winner of UT Tyler vs. West Texas A&M/Cameron in the semifinals to close out the action on Friday night.
NOTE FOR FANS PLANNING ON ATTENDING: UT Tyler's softball facility is cash only at the ticket booth and concession stand.
