SERIES HISTORY:
All-Time Series: ASU leads 2-1
Last Meeting: The Rams pulled off a come-from-behind victory on the road last season, erasing a 24-point deficit to defeat the Eagles 28-24.
The Rams are coming off a season where they ended with the 11th overall ranking in Division II after appearing in the quarterfinals of the 2021 NCAA Division II National Tournament, winning back-to-back playoff games at home for the first time since 1989. ASU also tied the program record for most wins in a season with 11.
BACKFIELD DUO RETURNS:
Angelo State brings back one of the best running back duos in Division II in
Nathaniel Omayebu III and
Alfred Grear. Omayebu was the Lone Star Conference Running Back of the Year after rushing for over 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns to lead the LSC while Greer was second with 839 yards and five touchdowns.
POWER AT THE D LINE:
Tre'Darius Colbert and
Weston Bauer return to lead the defensive line after combining for eight sacks last year and 21 tackles for loss.
BRONKHORST FILE:
Quarterback
Zach Bronkhorst returns for his third season leading the Rams' offense. With a career 56 completion percentage, Bronkhorst has collected 3,191 passing yards in his career while throwing for 19 touchdowns in 2021.
LONG LEADS THE FRONT PACK:
Jacob Long brings back the most experience on the offensive line as the only returning starter from last season.
DISRUPTING OFFENSES:
Daron Allman returns at the linebacker position as one of the top defensive players for the Rams after leading the LSC in tackles for loss with a total of 19 on the season.
BALL HAWKIN':
Defensive backs
K'hari Watson, Kason McCoullugh-Cooper, and
Andrew Pitts all return for ASU, collecting nine interceptions last season with 20 pass breakups.
SCOUTING THE CHADRON STATE EAGLES:
- Chadron State begins their season against the Rams after going 6-5 a season ago.
- The big question for the Eagles is who will be QB after having to replace six-year starter Dalton Holst who holds CSC's career record for passing yards.
- Jeydon Cox returns as the top rusher for CSC, collecting nine touchdowns and 647 yards on the ground.
- The Eagles' defensive backfield is led by First-Team All-RMAC corner Bobby Peele and Brendan Brehmer who tallied 55 tackles last season.
- In 2021, Chadron State collected over 4,300 yards of total offense and 46 touchdowns while the defense allowed 33 touchdowns.
