No. 18 Rambelles Rout Regis, Cal Poly Humboldt for First Wins of the Season

Conroe, Texas – The Angelo State softball team bounced back from a tough day one at the Division II Spring Invitational Kickoff with a pair of 9-1 victories on day two over Regis and Cal Poly Humboldt.

Over the two games, the Rambelles scored 18 runs on 22 hits, with seven extra-base hits and eight stolen bases.

The Rambelles kicked off the scoring in game one when Ashlyn Lerma drew a four-pitch walk, then stole second base; she advanced to third base on a Layni Tanner infield single before Tanner herself stole second base shortly after that.

Paxton Scheurer grounded out to score Lerma and give the Rambelles a 1-0 lead.

Lindsey Evans led off the second inning with a single before stealing second and advancing to third on a single by Bailey Martinez. Evans would score on a double steal, while Martinez would score later in the inning on a Tatiana Trotter sacrifice fly.

Regis' lone run came in the bottom of the second inning off a Rambelle error; Scheurer would respond for the Rambelles in the next half-inning with a solo home run, her third of the season.

Trotter would drive in two more runs in the fourth inning on her first career collegiate hit, a triple to the right-center gap, to extend the Rambelles' lead to 6-1.

Scheurer would produce another RBI groundout in the fifth, and an RBI single in the seventh, and Madison Fernandez would push across the final run on an RBI double.

Torrey Hogan picked up her first win of the season, only allowing six hits and one unearned run in six innings of work; she struck out five and threw 117 pitches in the victory. Cheyenne Floyd pitched the final inning in relief, only throwing 11 pitches and striking out two Rangers.

The story of game two for the Rambelles was a seven-run second inning that placed the game beyond reach of Cal Poly Humboldt.

Fernandez started the inning with a single through the right side; Evans, the next batter, laid down a bunt, with the ensuing defensive play seeing Evans collide with Jacks second baseman Vanessa Saltos and allowing Fernandez to round the bases to score the game's first run.

Maleya Burns would single to put another run on for Keilei Garcia, who cleared the bases with her second home run of the season.

With two outs in the inning, Tanner would hit the ball into the left centerfield gap and would round the bases for a two-run inside-the-park home run, her first extra-base hit in her brief collegiate career.

The inside-the-park home run is the fourth the Rambelles have produced since the beginning of last season, with three coming on Field 1 at the Scrap Yard Sports Complex.

Scheurer would go back-to-back with Tanner with a traditional home run to cap off the seven-run inning, her fourth of the season.

Lerma would drive in a pair of runs in the next frame to put the final tally for the Rambelles at nine; the Jacks would scrape a run in the top of the fifth to avoid being shutout but could not avoid the run rule.

Genesis Armendariz notched her first win of the season, throwing all five innings and allowing three hits and one run while striking out four.

The Rambelles are 2-2 on the season and close their weekend out tomorrow against Pittsburg State and MSU Denver.
