SAN ANGELO – Day two of the George and Ola McCorkle Challenge proved to be a repeat of results from day one for the Angelo State softball team, who defeated Regis 5-4 and Texas A&M International 7-0 en route to closing their weekend with a 4-0 record.
The win sees the Rambelles extend their winning streak at the George and Ola McCorkle Challenge to 14 wins a row, dating back to 2022.
The Rambelles opened the scoring against Regis in their first game of the day, with
Layni Tanner's speed forcing a Rangers error and an
Averie Gunther hit by pitch setting up
Keilei Garcia, who hit her third homerun of the season to give the Rambelles the early advantage.
The Rangers would immediately respond with a two-run home run the next inning to cut the lead to a single run.
A
Zoey De Baca two-out single in the fourth inning gave the Rambelles an insurance run, though the Rangers would respond with a run of their own the next half-inning.
A one-out home run by shortstop
Erin Plunkett – her first for the Blue and Gold – regifted the Rambelles a two-run lead, which also proved to be the winning run as the Rangers cut the deficit back to one in the top of the seventh inning.
Gunther got the start in the circle, picking up her second win of the season, giving up two earned runs and five hits in 4.1 innings of work. Ameila Hatthorn pitched the final 2.2 innings in relief, only allowing two hits and one run as she earned her first save for ASU.
Tanner got the Rambelles' offense started right away in game two against the Dustdevils, tripling to left center before scoring later in the inning on a groundout.
Singles by
Tatiana Trotter and Plunkett to lead off the second inning set up
Carter Smith, who singled in Trotter to double the host's advantage. A De Baca sacrifice fly and an
Ashton Dirner RBI single plated two more runs in the inning.
Tanner, the next batter, singled in Dirner to grow the Rambelles' lead to 5-0.
Tanner would drive in another run in the fourth inning; teammate
Laylonna Applin closed the scoring with a two-out single in the seventh inning, putting the scoreline at 7-0.
Former McLennan teammates
Cheyenne Floyd and
Matie Wolkow, reunited at ASU, combined for the Rambelles' first shutout of the season. Floyd improved to 6-0 on the season after her four innings of work where she only allowed two hits while striking out six Dustdevils. Wolkow struck out two and only allowed two hits in three innings of work as she picked up her second save of the season.
The Rambelles close non-conference play with a 9-1 record; they stay at home next weekend as they host Midwestern State on Friday and Saturday to open LSC play.
