Conroe, Texas – The Angelo State softball team split their final two games of the weekend at the DII First Pitch Invitational at the Scrap Yard Sports facility, with the Rambelles falling to No. 19 Rogers State 6-3 before defeating Colorado Mesa 7-6.
The Rambelles opened the scoring in the second inning of game one against the Hillcats, with back-to-back bunt singles from
Tatiana Trotter and
Laylonna Applin preceding an
Erin Plunkett single to score Trotter for the game's first run.
The Hillcats plated a pair of runs in the fourth inning to take the lead before the Rambelles responded with two runs of their own – courtesy of a two-run double from Trotter – before RSU scored two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to secure the win.
Averie Gunther only allowed two walks, a hit and two runs (one earned) in 3.1 innings inside the circle in her second start for ASU.
Carter Smith started the scoring in game two for the Rams; after making a diving catch into the fence in foul territory in the bottom of the first, the junior left fielder tripled to left center to drive in a run; she would double the Rambelles' lead when she scored on an
Ashton Dirner single.
Trotter would drive in a run the next inning, and the Rambelles' lead would expand to 4-0 when they pushed across another run on a double steal.
The Rambelles scored three in the fifth inning, doing so on a Maverick error, an RBI single by
Zoey De Baca, and a steal of home by Plunkett.
The Mavericks struck for their first run in the bottom of the fifth before pushing across five runs in the sixth; however, the Rambelles would hold on for a 7-6 win.
Cheyenne Floyd started the final game of the weekend and carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning. She pitched 6.1 innings and struck out ten Mavericks to pick up her fourth win of the weekend.
The Rambelles exit the opening weekend with a 5-1 record; they are back in action next weekend when they host the George and Ola McCorkle Challenge.
