SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team played two very different games on Friday at Mayer Field as a part of the George and Ola McCorkle Challenge, but despite the variations, the results were the same – the Rambelles held their opponents to one run in each game, defeating Texas A&M International 10-1 in a five-inning run-rule and closing the day with a 3-1, come-from-behind win over Regis.
The Dustdevils kicked off the scoring in game one in the third inning with a one-out single.
The Rambelles responded by scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning.
With two outs and two runners in scoring position, freshman
Laylonna Applin homered off the left-field foul pole to give the Rambelles a 3-1 lead.
Back-to-back-to-back singles by
Averie Gunther,
Keilei Garcia, and
Tatiana Trotter loaded the bases for
Erin Plunkett, who drew a walk to push across the fourth run of the inning.
Finally on the scoreboard, the Rambelles scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth. Designated player
Zoey De Baca drew a leadoff walk before scoring on a
Layni Tanner triple. Tanner would then score on an Applin single to left field.
Gunther singled and advanced on the throw to put two runners in scoring position for Garcia, who drove in both runners to make it 8-1.
The next batter, Trotter, homered off the top of the left field fence to push the lead to 10-1.
Averie Gunther picked up her first win inside the circle for ASU, pitching four innings and allowing three hits and one run.
Amelia Hatthorn pitched a perfect final inning in relief of her former Weatherford College teammate.
Game two saw the action pick up in the third inning, when the Rangers loaded the bases with no outs.
Cheyenne Floyd came into the game in relief and proceeded to notch three strikeouts to strand the trio of baserunners.
The Rangers got on the scoresheet with a solo home run in the fourth inning, and they held the one-run lead until the bottom of the sixth inning.

Ashton Dirner and Tanner to open the frame saw the Rambelles have two runners in scoring position with no outs.
Gunther singled to tie the score, and the next batter, Garcia, tallied an RBI single of her own to give the Rambelles the lead. Trotter gave the Rambelles an insurance run with a sacrifice fly.
Floyd dazzled inside the circle for the Rambelles, picking up her fifth win of the season as she struck out ten Rangers in five innings of work.
The Rambelles improve to 7-1 on the season; they close out their weekend tomorrow when they host day two of the George and Ola McCorkle Challenge.
