STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Angelo State started hot but quickly cooled off in a 65-47 road loss to Tarleton State at Wisdom Gym Saturday. The Rambelles hit their first four shot attempts of the contest, but made just two more field goals in the first half while dropping to 1-1 in Lone Star Conference South Division play.
Angelo State (8-6, 1-1 LSC South) guard
Camille Perkins scored seven of the team's first 11 points and finished tied for the game-high with 14 points. Perkins helped ASU jump out to a 11-5 lead in the first five minutes of the contest, but Angelo State managed just two baskets before halftime and endured a 13:22 drought between its last basket of the first half (8:16) and its next field goal in the second half (14:54).
Lindsey Mahone also reached double figures for ASU with 10 points.
Tarleton State (12-2, 2-0 LSC South) used a high-pressure defense to force 14 first-half turnovers and limit Angelo State to a 27 percent mark from the field. Shelby Adamson scored eight of her game-high-tying 14 points in the first half. Despite the troubles shooting from the field and keeping possession of the ball, the Belles were able to take a 19-18 lead on a lay-up by
Morgan Youngblood with 8:16 left in the first half.
That's when the scoring stopped. Tarleton State closed the half on a 12-1 run, with Angelo State's only points coming on a free throw by
Karli Kellermeier with 26 second left before the break, and led 30-20 at halftime. Tarleton State extended its lead to 14 points in the first five minutes of the second half as the 'Belles continued to come up empty from the field. Mahone ended the drought for ASU with a three-pointer to make it 35-24 at the 14:54 mark.
Angelo State was never able to mount a serious comeback as the TexAnns extended their lead to as many as 26 points in the second half. Angelo State made a brief rally in the game's final minutes to pull within 18.
The Belles finished 12-of-46 (26.1 percent) from the field and committed a season-high 27 turnovers. Kellermeier was ASU's third leading scorer with nine points.
Paige Weishuhn was limited to just five points as the 'Belles were outscored 40-12 in the paint. Tarleton also tallied 27 points off turnovers and scored 13 fast break points. Eleven different players scored for Tarleton state.
Angelo State continues Lone Star Conference South Division play on the road against Texas A&M-Kingsville Wednesday (Jan. 19), before returning to the Junell Center for a match-up with West Texas A&M on Saturday (Jan. 22).
