Belles Throttle Texas A&M-International 80-66

SAN ANGELO, Texas –
The Angelo State women's basketball team scored a season high in points in an 80-66 win over Texas A&M-International in Laredo, Texas.

“This was a tough game and we played well,” head coach Sally Walling Brooks said after the game. “College basketball players have to practice and play during Thanksgiving, Christmas and Spring break if you're any good.”

The Belles (6-4, 3-1 LSC) took a 40-37 lead at halftime but were down early. Texas A&M-International (3-7) used three 3-pointers and 12 points from its bench to take a 35-25 lead with six minutes to go in the first half. ASU used a 15-2 run over the final 6:02 in the first half to take the lead at halftime. Faith Hunt led the Belles by socring all of her eight points in the first half.   

The second half started with a 17-1 run for the Belles to extend their lead to 57-39. Haylee Oliver scored 10 of her game high 22 points over the first six minutes.

ASU outscored the Dustdevils 40-29 in the second half and had a double-digit lead for a majority of the second half. The Belles shot 51.9-percent (29-56) compared to 33.3-percent (25-75) from the field and it is ASU's highest shooting percentage of the season.

“I am very proud of them,” Brooks said. I know they are excited about getting some time off and going home. We are definitely getting better and moving in the right direction.” 

Oliver recorded her fourth-straight double-double of the season with  bn  22 points and 10 rebounds. The sophomore hit four 3-pointers and grabbed all 10 rebounds on the defensive end. Three other Belles scored in double figures with Cassi Stegall (17 points), Lauren Holt (11 points) and Leah LeMaire's (10 points).

Samantha Chacon led the Dustdevils with 19 points and six assists.

The Belles will return to the court on Wed., Jan. 2 for a Lone Star Conference matchup with Cameron in Lawton, Okla. The tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
